About

Old Fashioned Ice Cream Parlour & Candy Factory

Story

La King's is your connection to a by-gone era. La King's Confectionery goes back to the 1920's when James H. King began his apprenticeship in candymaking at the St. Regis Confectionery in Houston, Texas. He learned his craft well under the watchful eyes of "old-world masters". Jimmy established his own business and eventually supplied stores throughout the south. He inspired his sons to learn the candy business with the same pride and attention to detail.

In 1976, Jimmy's oldest son, Jack, moved his family to the historic Strand In Galveston to recreate an old fashioned confectionery. With the help of his family, Jack created La King's Confectionery. He has continued to use the 19th century formulas and methods handed down to him, making confections using traditional equipment and procedures.

La King's features a 1920's soda fountain, serving malts, shakes, ice cream sodas, sundaes, splits, floats, and your favorite treats.

We proudly make and serve "Purity" ice cream. Purity was Texas' first ice cream manufacturer, founded in 1889 on Galveston Island.

Our Master candy maker, Ernest Torres, will delight you with his old time specialties; peanut brittle, divinity, pecan pralines, hand dipped chocolates, fudge, and our famous salt water taffy made right before your eyes on antique equipment. We make more than 50 candies from traditional recipes, just waiting for you!

Our newest addition, a full service coffee shop is ready to serve you fresh brewed DUNCAN coffee and your favorite espresso drinks. We carry a full like of fresh roasted Duncan beans as well.

Our complete line of chocolates, salt water taffy and other candies can be ordered online & shipped to your home or to others as a gift.

A real Galveston tradition! La King's is a must stop while on the island. Start with the myriad chocolate options, including fudge. They also have many other kinds of candy like jelly beans and taffy. The other side of the store has an ice cream parlor and coffee bar. The service is friendly and efficient. Stock up on the way out for that long drive back to Houston!

Top must see Galveston spot. It was like walking into the gates of heaven. Countless assortments of taffy, ice cream, chocolates, and every other sugary delight you can imagine. I got a couple of almost every taffy flavor to try and share with my GF and it tasted delicious!

Where there's a crowd, you know you'll find something worth the wait... Great ice cream at unbeatable price. They work that line like you won't believe and the flavor selection... Well, this is one of those occasions when less is more. Their handcrafted candy is off the chain too. This is an obligated stop if you visit Galveston. Tip: If you visit during the summer and you ask for a cone, make sure you also take a cup and a spoon. It gets so hot outside that even though the ice cream has the right consistency, it starts melting as soon as you hit the street.
