Story

Mammoth Cave National Park is a U.S. national park in central Kentucky, encompassing portions of Mammoth Cave, the longest cave system known in the world. Since the 1972 unification of Mammoth Cave with the even-longer system under Flint Ridge to the north, the official name of the system has been the Mammoth-Flint Ridge Cave System. The park was established as a national park on July 1, 1941. It became a World Heritage Site on October 27, 1981, and an international Biosphere Reserve on September 26, 1990.The park's 52,830acre are located primarily in Edmonson County, with small areas extending eastward into Hart County and Barren County. It is centered on the Green River, with a tributary, the Nolin River, feeding into the Green just inside the park. With of surveyed passageways Mammoth Cave is by far the world's longest known cave system, being nearly twice as long as the second-longest cave system, Mexico's Sac Actun underwater cave.Limestone labyrinthMammoth Cave developed in thick Mississippian-aged limestone strata capped by a layer of sandstone, making the system remarkably stable. It is known to include more than of passageway; new discoveries and connections add several miles to this figure each year. Mammoth Cave National Park was established to preserve the cave system.

Fantastic family place. Greatest cave tours I've ever been on. The cave is enormous. There are so many different places in the cave to visit that you can come back over and over. I recommend the lantern tour. Long but not to strenuous until the very end. Seeing the cave by lantern lite is a wondrous opportunity that I will always remember.

I would highly recommend going here! We had an excellent experience and made memories that will last a lifetime! I can't think of one bad thing about our time there!!! If you go stay in one of the cabins, they're really nice and affordable. Clean rooms with hot showers that have great water pressure.

I would like to start off by saying that this place is totally worth the go!!! It is a fairly close drive from Austin. I went with my husband on a Monday so there wasn't a lot of people (which is what we wanted). We went in and found a small gift shop. A friendly worker asked us if we needed help and re directed us to the ticket booth. They had 3 choices for the cave tours. The most expensive one was $100 and a few hours long. That was the hardcore one where you have to squeeze through very tight spaces. That was a no go for first timers. Then they had a middle difficulty level one. However we ended up going for the least difficulty as it was our first time. The tour guide was funny and very informative. He took his time leading us through the cave and giving us time to look around and take pictures. It is an active cave so beware of the humidity. I live in Houston so I was not shook. The cavern is beautifully lit. Watch out for low points in the cavern. The whole thing took a bit over an hour. We got our picture taken and exited the cave. I would totally go back!!!

Had a fantastic time at Mammoth Caves today! We did the Domes and Dripstones tour with Ranger Larry. What an amazing tour! The formations and domes we went through, around, and under were spectacular. Ranger Larry was very informative. Can't wait to try another tour or one of the hikes. :)

If you want to take a tour you will need to book online a day beforehand, at least. Although we had to take a shorter tour, we had a very enjoyable time. The ranger who showed us around was awesome, he was funny and well informed on the matters at hand. Plenty of fun for the lone ranger or the entire family of rangers.
