Yesterday we experienced the most idiotic city park rule ever. My 6 year old daughter and I arrived at Luther Burbank Park so that we could have fun in the sun. Our daughter is a great swimmer and loves the water, so we were really looking forward to getting in the water. But as soon as we got there, the lifeguards closed the beach. Why? Was there a missing child? Hazardous waste in the water? Sharks? No, they closed the beach because the Blue Angels were practicing their almost two-hour routine. Apparently the city feels that people can't swim while airplanes and flying overhead. The distraction will cause people to forget they have kids in the water and they'll drown. Or something. The Angels flew directly over us exactly twice, and it look about 3 seconds each time. Occasionally they'd show up on the horizon and everyone would go "ooh ahh" for a few seconds. Otherwise, kids and parents were busy building sand castles and longingly at the water. There was absolutely no reason to close this beach, and no potential for disaster due to the jets flying overhead, unless one of them happened to crash into the beach, which actually seems more likely than drowning due to Angel distraction. Can we please get some common sense here?
