Tried to find out information about a public hearing involving my next door neighbor, a person who had a complaint filed against him for keeping a noisy dog. Both the court and the prosecutor's office refused to give me ANY information without a docket number, which of course I didn't have (such information is not listed online; only the defendant's name and courtroom). I knew the person's name, but two hearings were scheduled for that named person, one on the one day, another on the following day. Not good enough, no information released. This was a PUBLIC hearing which I am entitled to attend. The court's and prosecutor's actions were OUTRAGEOUS. The Mesa Municipal Court system is a joke. My rating: 0 stars (I had to note 1 star in order to post this statement, which I resent).

A money grab! they had a weak case on a reckless driving charge (class 2 misdemeanor) the plea bargain they offered me was racing on highway - a class 1 misdemeanor! Why would I plea to a greater offense? the whole idea of a plea bargain is to plead to a lesser offense in exchange for saving the court time. they then offered a plea of TWO speeding tickets for this one incident - clearly only concerned with making money. when I asked for a jury trial they tried to say it wasn't eligible, when I proved them wrong they amended the charge to racing on highway anyway. Since there were no other cars on the road at the time, the charges were dropped, but you can bet if there was even one car they would have said I was racing them just to get $$. the police also embellished their story knowing the court would side with them by default.

As is the case with the rest of our justice [*sic*] system, this place has nothing to do with actual justice; it's just a money-making racket, not only for the government but also for an entire constellation of parasitic industries associated therewith, like substance abuse counselling--which I'm being sentenced to even though I haven't used drugs or alcohol for years and am not even accused of such a thing. They actually charge an indigency fee of $25 to indigent defendants. Yes, you heard that right--they actually charge people a fee for being too poor to pay fees! "How much money do you have? Give us your money! Yes my precious, your MONEY! MONEY! MONEY! MONEY! MONEY! MONEY! MONEY! MONEY! MONEY! MONEY! MONEY! MONEY! MONEY! MONEY! MONEY! MONEY! MONEY! MONEY! MONEY! MONEY! MONEY! MONEY! "'Did you really think we want those laws observed?' said Dr. Ferris. 'We want them to be broken. You'd better get it straight that it's not a bunch of boy scouts you're up against... We're after power and we mean it... There's no way to rule innocent men. The only power any government has is the power to crack down on criminals. Well, when there aren't enough criminals one makes them. One declares so many things to be a crime that it becomes impossible for men to live without breaking laws. Who wants a nation of law-abiding citizens? What's there in that for anyone? But just pass the kind of laws that can neither be observed nor enforced or objectively interpreted – and you create a nation of law-breakers – and then you cash in on guilt. Now that's the system, Mr. Reardon, that's the game, and once you understand it, you'll be much easier to deal with.'" --Ayn Rand, _Atlas Shrugged_
