The City of Minneapolis Health Department is one of 10 charter departments established in the City Charter in 1867.
The City of Minneapolis has a long history in public health. The Minneapolis Board of Health (later called the Minneapolis Health Department and then the Minneapolis Department of Health and Family Support) was formed in 1867 immediately following the incorporation of the City of Minneapolis. The department performed a variety of functions including infectious disease surveillance and control; water, food and veterinary inspections; garbage removal; vital records; and laboratory services. The City also operated the Minneapolis General Hospital, which opened its doors in 1887.
