Our mission is to cultivate community experiences through education, preservation and celebration of the region’s rich history and culture.

Story

Morris Center for Lowcountry Heritage, is a non-profit organization with a goal of community engagement through educational programing and changing exhibits connected to the Lowcountry heritage.

The Center advances education and engagement initiatives that preserve the lowcountry’s history and culture through projects, events and exhibitions that inspire interest and evoke inquiry. The Trust creates a vibrant center where a wide diversity of people gather to explore and learn about the region’s distinctive sense of place.

This center is one of the most important in the area and needs more community support and engagement. Very little other than wonderful things can be said for a small center in the middle of Ridgeland, South Carolina continuing the dialogue on Lowcountry heritage and making specialty programs available to children at no cost. Events like the Meet and Greet for reptiles, Turtles, Lowcountry Raptors, and more require fair admission charges at most facilities offering the programming. MCfLH makes no such request, only recently requesting a small contribution ($10) for Marsh Tacky and the Oyster events that are more costly for them to put on. Horses don't barge from Daufuskie for free... Admission is always free though and there is something for the whole family. Now, adults may find the three room building a bit small, but as a parent, I can say categorically that small and school aged children will happily spend an afternoon playing and learning. This is an honest treasure for the area that I hope is supported by municipal benefactors as well as patrons. I feel ill equipped, on a personal basis, to speak to their efforts in supporting local African American history and heritage. But they do, and they have made it a clear focus, and it is important.
