Mount Shasta is one of the most exquisitely beautiful and serene places of the planet. A dormant volcano towering over 14,000 over the Shasta Valley at 3000 feet, Mount Shasta can be seen from 200 miles away in the Central Valley on a clear day. It draws both backpacking enthusiasts as well as pilgrims from all over the world. It is one of the volcanoes in the Ring of Fire. It has been called "Kailash of the West." Take Central Mount Shasta City exit which becomes Everitt Memorial Highway as it winds up about 15 miles to over 8,000 feet. This road is only open this far from around July 4th until late September. When there is snow, the road is accessible up to Bunny Flat which is above 6000 feet and the launching point for many climbers. Panther Meadows just above 7000 feet is sacred ground and worth a walk into it for some solitude. If you come out of warm summer day, be sure to carry layers with you as the weather can change very quickly!

Had a great climb up Shasta over Memorial Day. I spent a few extra hours in bunny flats to soak in the beautiful surroundings.

This was one of the toughest hikes I've ever done requiring crampons, ice axe, and glacier glasses. And it was one of the most amazingly awesome hikes. Around 14,000 foot elevation it took around 7 hours to ascend and 3 to descend because we glissaded all the way to the bottom (sled on your butt down the snow using your ice axe as a brake...it's as awesome as it sounds).
