Mushroom Rock State Park

Story

Mushroom Rock State Park, located in the Smoky Hills region of north-central Kansas, is noted for its mushroom rock formations. These mushroom rocks are an example of hoodoos, formed through a process of nonuniform erosion and weathering in which a hard mass of Dakota Sandstone capstone resisted erosion while the underlying softer stone weathered away. There are two mushrooms and a giant shoe rock, as well as numerous other rock formations in the 5acre park.

Smallest park in Kansas, at about 5 acres, but stunning rock formations strewn about. The most impressive are a couple of mushroom-shaped stones standing about 20 feet high, the result of non-uniform erosion. The park's about 20 miles off I-135 outside of Salina, including a couple of miles on dirt roads. Funky restrooms but not much else in the way of amenities, but no crowds and the grounds feel like a hidden gem.

Fascinating to see these formations... especially in Kansas. Nice little park to spend some time.

This is a clean and well-kept park, but really nothing more than a rest stop in the middle of nowhere. The formations have been ignored too long and are completely covered in graffiti. The State Park service really should put a little more effort into preserving this spot.

Unique rock sculptures. Sad people are carving on them.

This Kansas state Park is billed as the smallest state park in Kansas. If you have some time to take a break from driving across Kansas, this park makes a great place to explore for 30 minutes to an hour. Following Google map directions to the park, it appears that you are driving towards not much of anything until you get to the park and see the mushroom rocks. There is a small picnic area and pit-style bathroom available on location and a short walking trail.
