New Bedford Whaling National Historical Park

About

The National Park Service cares for special places saved by the American people so that all may experience our heritage.

Story

New Bedford was the mid 19th century’s preeminent whaling port and for a time “the richest city in the world.” Come stroll down cobblestone streets, visit the world’s largest whaling museum, tour a whaling merchant’s home and whaleman's chapel, and walk a 19th century schooner’s decks. Walk in the footsteps of Herman Melville and Frederick Douglass and learn about a remarkable era.

An hour from Boston, and absolutely worth the trip. Despite what you may think of Moby Dick, this place has something for every interest and age. It’s an incredibly interdisciplinary museum. Natural history, cultural history, industrial history, maritime history, ocean science, art - and all focused around the grandest animals on earth, whales.

Great look into New Bedford whaling history. They have a world class whaling museum with actual whale skeletons hanging from the ceiling. Nice walking tours guided by park rangers and volunteers.

The area was absolutely beautiful. We went to the whaling museum and we're shocked at the amount of artifacts they have on display. Everything from a boat to full on whale skeletons. Very interactive and knowledgeable staff. Would recommend for any age. And definitely a must do in the area.

This place was an unexpected journey for my grandsons and us adults too! Three levels of amazing history, a theatre showing old footage and new and a whole floor with an actual whaling ship for the kids to climb on The artifacts are amazing and the look into New Bedford and the Azores connection was quite impressive. It does cost 12.95 for adults and 10 for kids so bring the credit cards. Usually your pass is good for 2 days!

Very cool. Interesting history. Amazing what people did to obtain whale oil. Huge part of the economy at the time.
