I joined the gym hoping that it would be a nice experience for me. It was not. First of all at the time of joining.. The front desk guy never explained the terms and conditions of joining the gym. I had to join the gym for a total of 2 months. The person tells me to inform them 15 days in advance to cancel my membership. I go a month in advance to cancel it and the new person says it's 45 days. So i talk to the manager and she complies.. But now i still got charged for the month I wasn't even there!! Secondly- The guy was so lax , he didn't get me to sign the paperwork! Third- My free evaluation was to be done by a trainer named ricardo.. He kept forgetting and forwarding the dates and never showed up! Yet he was always present at the gym giving personal training to other clients? I liked the gym for what it's worth. But the management and the team are really not the best i have seen. Please join the ymca instead down the street !

9/11 update: the improvements aren't happening. It would really benefit from some onsight management. The equipment functions but the issues I noted below either haven't changed and the competing sound systems is ridiculous. 5/21 update: the business director contacted me this afternoon and the conversation was encouraging. And he explained how they were trying to make improvements. So giving credit where credit is due, toning it down a little and thanks to Paul. I have been a member of this club for over 6 years and I miss the gym that it used to be. Roughly two years ago their membership structure changed as well as their rates (which were almost halved) and since then it has been a downhill ride. It's become increasingly crowded and dense, noisy with overlapping sound systems and generally less respectful: members of the gym and of one another. Finally, and what has prompted me to write a review, my locker was broken into this past weekend and my wallet was stripped of all of its cash. Happily they left behind all but the cash and I am grateful for that. But two years or more ago this just does not seem that it have happened (5/21 - according to business director there was a spate of thefts three years ago). Now, I was not surprised so I guess shame on me. One plus is the staff at the desk. They are always extremely pleasant and have gone above and beyond the call of duty. By far the gym's greatest asset! Another is the towel service. I don't understand gyms without towels.

Friendly people plus the people working out are not intimidating. The locker room is clean and well maintained but the bathroom stall is a little messy but oh well, the user should clean up after using so I really cant blame the management for it.

The gym’s maintenance hasn’t been improved even after $10 increase of the monthly fee. Recently half the stretching section is covered with towels because of water dripping from the ceiling. Today, there were cockroaches on the towels and I reported it to the front desk, but until I left it was not taken care of. The roaches were there for more than an hour. This is not the first time things don’t get resolved even after being reported to the desk.

This is the location I visit most regularly, but visit NYSCs around manhattan regularly and I'd say this location is a solid C. It's small, for sure. So waiting for equipment is to be expected, especially between about 4-9. There are always those neighborhood bros who use the gym as a social club when a lot of us are trying to hurry and get through our workout and in to all the rest of the things we have to do, but I guess that's not uncommon, especially at a lower-cost gym. The equipment is generally functional--though for the size of the clientele it seems like there's a real dearth of commonly used lower weights of dumbells--and it's an overall clean facility. The staff varies--there are several who are fantastic, and there are about half who are dismissive and completely checked out. 'But my biggest complaint, one i've seen noted in other reviews, is the use of a separate PA-style sound system in the main area. I suppose I can understand an hour here and there for a X-fit style class (though really, couldn't that also be done in the enclosed room?). The thing that drives me over the edge, though--and makes me with I could give a 2.5--is several of the trainers using the sound system like their personal home stereo, BLASTING YouTube videos of random crappy DJ sets, and music with offensive, misogynistic lyrics, while they do their OWN personal workout. If we all have to have headphones why don't they? (And often my headphones aren't even enough--I can STILL hear their music on the other side of the space!
