Beautiful park with nice trails. There are playsets for the kids, camping spots, and often there are events held here. The lookout tower is fun as well.

If you visit my channel, you can see a video I shot of Newton Hills. This is an amazing park! Much of Eastern SD is flat except in the area of Newton Hills, and along that region of the Sioux River. Newton Hills is the only hardwood forest in SD. Driving there: If you're coming from Sioux Falls, be sure to take Hwy 11 to Canton, then from Canton follow the brown signs and head South to Newton Hills. That route sets the tone for your visit as you leave the flat land and into a diverse landscape of well maintained curving roads that beg, nay, taunt you to push your car's suspension to it's structural limit, like a seductive car commercial...but alas, kids on board, and you return from your fantasy to enjoy the slower paced view of forest and wild flowers. ... (You can take I29, but it's not the same). What to do there: Bring your bikes! There's miles of off road trails, or if you just want to get around the park, a bike is a camper friendly way to traverse the campground. Wildlife watching. The best time to see deer is in the early morning, however, you'll occasionally spook deer while hiking/biking the trail system at any time of the day. Birds of many feather flock together in Newton Hills. Bird watching is incredibly easy to do here because they're everywhere! Bees. Find the huge clover patch and the bees are everywhere...don't worry, they're very uninterested in people..the sound they make in mid-day is remarkable, a must experience attraction. Forest decay: As mentioned in my video tour, the unique smell of forest decay is ubiquitous to Newton Hills, a scent you wish you could take with you back to the city. Pests: The park is sprayed for bugs, but the fringe areas between the manicured lawn and the tree-line harbor an array of bugs you'll want to avoid, such as ticks and chiggers. Facilities: Newton Hills has all the basics you need, several shower houses, plumbed and unplumbed bathrooms throughout the park make it very easy to do you business. All kept clean. Camping includes spots for pull behinds with electrical, tent sites, and well priced cabins. There's even a full size house you can rent for special occasions, great for weddings or large family gatherings when pitching a tent is out of the question. Phone service is just the way you want it...non existent. I suggest taking your kids' tablets away a few days before you go, so it's not such a shock for them. There's lots to explore and see, with plenty of quiet relaxation. Make a memory at Newton Hills, see ya there!

One of my favorite places close to Sioux Falls. The trails are well kept, muddy days are great because most people won't hike in mud. It is easy to put in 10+ miles without getting too repetitive.

Really unique state park for eastern South Dakota. Forested and hilled, lots of walking trails, water access. I highly recommend surveying a day here.

Good place for family. Has multiple playground areas for kids. Great place to ride bikes or go hiking. They even had a wedding there today! There is trash and recycling available.
