Nonna Emilia Ristorante Italiano

About

Local family owned Italian restaurant with award winning recipes.

Story

My Nonna (Nonna is Italian for Grandmother) Emilia grew up in Florence, Italy where her mother and grandmother taught her to cook in the family café. In 1921, Nonna Emilia left Italy on a steamship to North America and six years later opened one of Portland's first authentic Italian restaurants with her husband, Ernie Ceccanti.

Nonna always insisted on using the finest ingredients when she prepared her specialties. She put eleven herbs and spices and a special blend of meats in her famous sauce. Her pastry-like dough and freshly ground cheeses made an extraordinary pizza. And, she took great pride in always serving enormous portions of every entrée she prepared.

In the family tradition, Nonna Emilia passed her recipes from "the old country" down to me. Today, in the restaurant that bears her name, we continue to prepare her Italian recipes with that same price!

Buon-Appetito

I would like to give them more stars since the food is delicious! However the service can leave something to be desired. I was planning a large birthday party for their banquet room. I had to call four times and wait on hold a total of 45 minutes altogether. No one I talk to seem to know how to book the banquet room or how the pricing and charging worked. They would tell me I needed to talk to manager but the manager was only there for three hours a day. So I would need to call between 7 PM and 10 PM to fully process the reservations. When I finally got a manager they told me that the bill had to be paid all together and drinks will be added to the bill. No one would be able to purchase their meals separately. So everyone had to plan to bring me cash so that I could pay the master bill with one card. Yet at the end, they charge each of us for our drinks separately and then put all the meals on the same bill. This confused everyone. If you can’t separate out peoples meal prices then why would you separate out their drinks? And charge them separately for their drinks? It was a lot more work than it should’ve been to make reservations and figure out how to pay for it. As one person in my party said, you would think a business that has been around this long could figure out how to charge people without giving them a headache.... After thought: The accordion player is a fun guy to watch and listen to! Great energy!

We were referred by a friend, who loves the place. It sells itself for being a small family place, and it delivered. It definitely had a small unassuming vibe, and the food was surprisingly good. Traditional Italian fare. $15-25 per person for anything from pizza, pastas, and even sandwiches. I would recommend this place for a less expensive date night for those who love good Italian food.

3.5 - The atmosphere is inviting and the staff is super friendly. Most of the food is so-so (the bottled salad dressings are particularly dreadful) and portions are honestly too big. They should put a little more effort into quality over quantity. However, their pizzas are great if you like a deep-dish style and, true to their claims, their tomato meat sauce is amazing. If you like garlic, this is where it's at! Skip everything else and just get the spaghetti or gnocchi with meat sauce. You won't be disappointed.

Got seated right away but the service was horrible and the food was disgusting. Our bread was supposed to be room temperature but was frozen. The fettuccine Alfredo was tasteless. And the manager was so rude I wanted to throw the bread at her. I will never be coming back here ever again and I will let everyone I know how this place treats their customers. So good luck if you ever come to this place.

The most generous portions of food, I loved the Cesar pesto salad. Also, I am pretty sure I had the best Long Island drink in my life last Friday night! That is a great bartender.
