Story

At Nye Auto, our number one goal has always been to serve the local community of Oneida and the surrounding areas with the best automotive experience by offering a friendly atmosphere, and superior sales and service. This isn’t just a business to us, it’s a part of our history. Family-owned and operated for more than 49 years, we owe a special thanks to our community of loyal customers for always supporting us.

It was an exciting day in 1968 when Harold Nye first stood in the newly built showroom in a modestly built Ford Lincoln Mercury building and looked out onto a busy Broad Street. After a quick success, the growing Nye Ford moved a couple miles west to a larger site at the five corners intersection on Route 5 in 1974, remaining there for more than 20 years.

As the needs of our community grew, so did Nye. In 1990, a Toyota Franchisee was added, and this created a two-dealership model that at the time was rather unique in the automotive business. Harold, who had always felt nostalgic about his Ford dealership in Alaska, designed the unique staple glass Toyota building in its likeness.

Unfortunately, soon after the Toyota dealership opened its doors, we felt the swift blow of a sluggish economy. After nearly two years of struggling, Harold was forced to become an inactive Toyota dealer.

In 1994, Walmart purchased the land at the five corners, and Nye was on the move again. The Ford Lincoln Mercury dealership was relocated along side our Toyota dealership on Route 5.

The Nye Auto Group found a permanent home, and we continued to offer drivers from all over central New York professional and reliable automotive services. Yes, life was good, and it was all thanks to Harold’s vision.
When Harold lost his battle with cancer in 1997, Bill, his oldest son, took on the role of Acting President. Having worked alongside his father since college, Bill had diverse experience in a number of departments—sales, finance, parts, and even management—making him a perfect fit. Bill became the owner of the dealership in 1998.

By honoring his father’s approach to business as a community and always putting the customer first, Bill was able to build the reputation of Nye Auto Group. In 2004, Nye expanded its repertoire to include Pontiac-GMC franchise to our family of dealerships. But despite all of our growth and expansion at Nye Auto Group, we have always had a soft spot for Harold’s Toyota building—his little piece of Alaska.

With the Nye team growing and providing the best customer service to our local community, Bill had the opportunity to expand once again. In August of 2015 we added a Volkswagen franchise to our group in Rome, NY. Nye Volkswagen of Rome was opened for business. The following year proved to be a tough one for Volkswagen but we stuck it out and completed a huge renovation of the store. Today stands a fully renovated Store equipped with a state of the art Showroom, Service drive and Parts warehouse to better assist our customer’s needs.

Thanks to our customers’ continued support, our Toyota Dealership has been awarded Toyota’s highest honor, The President’s Award, for 17 consecutive years as well as our Volkswagen store has received its first ever Wolfsburg Award in 2017. These are very prestigious awards given to dealerships with exemplary customer service and sales.

To carry on Harold’s legacy, our team at NYE Auto Group has vowed to continue providing superior automotive sales and service to our local community.

We have one of the largest inventories of both new and used vehicles, and highly trained automotive professionals run our service departments. We carry a wide variety of parts and accessories, and we even opened a PPG-Certified AquaBase® Plus Collision Center to complete the toughest of repairs.

Our outreach doesn’t stop with just our customers. For more than 31 years, Nye Auto Group has hosted the annual Share a Caring Christmas toy collection for needy youngsters in the area. The gala event brings out hundreds of well-wishers every December for a big holiday that shares the spirit with kids who might not see much under their own tree. At Nye you will see a variety of community-orientated events hosted or sponsored by Nye Auto Group throughout the year.
