Story

The Oceanside Police Department is here to ensure the safety and security of all people in the City of Oceanside by providing responsive and professional police service with compassion and concern. Our purpose is to work with the community to build trust and provide quality service that actively prevents crime, reduces the fear of crime and promotes safety.

Oceanside, a beach community located 39 miles north of San Diego, has a population of more than 175,000. The Oceanside Police Department has an authorized budgeted strength of 211 sworn and 89 professional staff members, and handles approximately 75,000 calls for service each year.

Our motto, "Service With Pride", speaks to our focus of quality customer service and efficient service. We are committed to public safety and to implementing innovative crime-prevention techniques to ensure a safe and healthy community. Our proven success is evident in the continuing decline of the City's crime rate, which hit a 30-year low in 2007, and in the positive customer satisfaction survey results.

Called to file a noise complaint. Just wanted an officer to come out and quiet down a rowdy weekday party that was still going strong at 3am. Dispatcher asked for my personal info and address. I told them that I'd rather remain anonymous as who I am and where I live have absolutely nothing to do with my complaint in any way, shape or form. Was told that an officer will not investigate my complaint without me giving up my private info. I could feel my blood pressure Spike and my eyelid start to twitch. I definitely gave the dispatcher an earful of what I think about OPD after this interaction. Hey OPD get your s#@* together and take the complaints of the citizens whose taxes pay you seriously. I am not going to give my damn info out when it's completely unneeded. Just writing this review more than a month later is starting my blood boiling remembering the dismissiveness of their department. Don't expect this guy to shed any tears or feign any sympathy next time a tragedy befalls the department... The karma adds up. Not to mention that I've never once interacted with an OPD officer who didnt come off as a bully who couldn't make it in the Marine corps but still wants to crack some heads with his buddies. OPD is just another gang to watch out for in the city. You'd be forgiven for not being able to differentiate their tactics from those of some goon mob enforcers. They do not protect or serve the citizens who pay them. RoboCop wannabes on a huge power trip who operate above the law cloaked behind a paper thin vaneer of professionalism that could only fool the most naive.

The only thing that scares me are people who have been given authority and empowered because these people do not use the aforementioned properly, they ABUSE IT. The Oceanside PD are not approachable. I've actually witnessed 6 officers on one person -- who was obviously no threat because he was placed on the ground, handcuffed, and was only able to nod YES-- as the 6 officers harassed the obviously "under the influence" young person at an event at the Amphitheater. They were 6 bullies on one young person, who knew they had made an mistake in life instantly upon apprehension and cooperated with the officers; however, they abused their LE authority instead of taking the young person to a holding facility within a reasonable amount of time. The young person was on the ground, in a tand top and shorts for over an hour. The next day I saw one of the officers and told him how I use to brag on Oside PD. I was told-- You Don't Know These JOKERS. So the visitors and citizens are know as JOKERS to OPD. Then, he continued with stats on over 20+ gangs in Oside, and I was offered a ride along so I could see how I would be scared to live in Oceanside. WTH! We are Jokers and they reinforce fear to the citizens? That is a sick attitude by at least six officers. This official had Ben on the OPD for over 20 years, so he's labeled himself UNTOUCHABLE.

Since I was a tiny little girl, I've been fascinated with the human mind and how it works. I've spent my entire life silently studying other people from a distance. I learned very young what people are capable of and I have to tell you that I agree with most of these reviews that I've read so far. The good ones and the bad ones. The few short years that I've lived in Oceanside, as a first class citizen, then as a homeless person and finally as a common criminal, I've had the unique opportunity to see and be part of very real examples of most of these same situations the reviewers speak of. I personally have been a target of Oceanside police corruption/ misconduct and had many of my human rights violated by specific officers from this agency (under the color of law). And then I've had the privilege of encountering some of the finest police officers I've ever known. When the time's right, I'll give the two senior officers that saved my life, their proper/ well deserved recognition. I believe that someone needs to introduce an annual, mandatory psych evaluation on all officers who are out in the field in close contact with the public. Just to make sure that everybody's still on the same page, haven't forgotten the basic civil/human rights or the reason why they took this job in the first place. To the leader and compliance officers of this agency: it would be wise to actually investigate some of these misconduct complaints of your officers. Trust me, nobody's going to like to hear the story of how a couple of your officer's assume it's ok to take several hours to respond to a serious domestic violence call, then leave to harrass an innocent girl across the street on private property for over an hour while the perp is watching for them to take her to jail on some illegal arrest, so that he can come right back into the victims house to beat her up some more for calling the cops. This is a true story, it's all documented, so who's ready to take responsibility for that? What actually are the priorities when it comes to getting criminals off the street? My entire family is either military or law enforcement. I was that innocent girl and the girl who was beat was a friend of mine. I'm not the one confused here. Get rid of your liabilities!

Very disappointed. It would take several pages, and too much time to explain my reason. Oceanside is not a place to live and feel safe. Their response time is ridiculous, they do not take pride in their job, and jeopardize public safety, rather than protect it. Moving out of Oceanside!
