Story

Palisades Interstate Park and its governing body, the Palisades Interstate Park Commission, was formed under an interstate compact in 1900 by governors Theodore Roosevelt of New York and Foster M. Voorhees of New Jersey in response to the destruction of the Palisades by quarry operators in the late 19th century. The Palisades are the cliffs on the west bank of the Hudson River across from and continuing north of Manhattan Island. The commission consists of ten commissioners, five appointed by each governor, who serve staggered five-year terms.HistoryIn 1900, George W. Perkins was appointed chairman of the newly formed commission by governor Roosevelt. He hired Major William A. Welch as assistant engineer, and in 1914 named him chief engineer and general manager. Under Welch's leadership, the Palisades Interstate Park grew from the initial 10000acre Bear Mountain State Park to the more than 40000acre Harriman State Park. By 1919 nearly a million people a year were coming to the park. When work started on the park there were no existing models or precedents for an endeavor of its nature and scope. Welch organized a massive reforestation program, built 23 new lakes, of scenic drives and 103 children's camps, where 65,000 urban children enjoyed the outdoors each summer. He helped found the Palisades Interstate Park Trail Conference, which later became the New York–New Jersey Trail Conference, and he served as chairman of the Appalachian Trail Conference.

A quick bicycle ride across the GWB leads to this beautiful park with windy roads and light car traffic most of which takes the Palisades Parkway or route 9. Beautiful river views and interesting wildlife. I have seen deer, pheasants and wild turkeys on bicycle rides and hikes as well as a multitude of birds. Visitors are amazed at this bucolic wilderness so close to the big city.

I'm going to take one star away just for the suicide ride down the hill. The ride down the hill has a border on the right protect you from falling off a cliff by having boulders every so many feet however I could easily see somebody driving off this road down to the bottom! that said once you get to the bottom there is a playground and a magnificent view of the George Washington Bridge! Visiting this in the winter we were lucky enough to see ice at the waters edge which made for some beautiful photos. Also since we visited in the winter however we did not go on any hiking trails but we hope to do that in the near future meaning no sooner than spring. I know that on weekends there's a five dollar parking fee per car down here. I do not know what the main building is for other than information if anything else.

Great for hiking and getting out in a forest. If you live in NYC it's a short drive, between 30 minutes and an hour from MH depending on traffic Which is pretty good for somewhere that feels like a "real" outdoor park.

The park may be nice with great views of the city but the Palisades Police that patrols the New Jersey side of things has got to be the most overzealous police dept ever. They're rude and quick to ticket you for the most minor of offenses while they freely speed up and down, tail gate any car in their way and talk on their cell phones while driving. If you have the pleasure of dealing with one of these officers, be prepared to be treated unprofessionally and talked down to. The court system for violations is horrendous as well and a cash cow for the state of New Jersey.

Beautiful park for hiking fishing bike riding. Observing nature. I was fishing and saw a bald eagle swoop down and grab a fish out the Hudson. I didn't catch anything and still enjoyed a relaxing exciting experience.
