About

Parrasch Heijnen is a contemporary Art Gallery in Los Angeles, California

Story

Franklin Parrasch, of Franklin Parrasch Gallery in New York City, and Christopher Heijnen have announced the opening of a new Los Angeles gallery, Parrasch Heijnen, opening January 29 2016. Parrasch Heijnen Gallery, a 5,000 square foot freestanding building at 1326 South Boyle Avenue in downtown Los Angeles, has two exhibition spaces as well as an outdoor sculpture area, and private, off street parking. Under the direction of Christopher Heijnen, who has been associated with Franklin Parrasch Gallery since 2006, Parrasch Heijnen Gallery Gallery will offer innovative exhibitions and a robust schedule of new and emerging artists contributing to the growing landscape of art in Los Angeles. Artists whose works cull from diverse resources, materials, and processes including sign-making, hot-rod finishing, surf culture, skate culture, and adapted craft traditions will be the keystone of the Parrasch Heijnen program.

Franklin Parrasch Gallery opened in Washington, DC in 1986 and relocated to New York City in 1989. Since its inception, the gallery has consistently organized shows that consider diverse evolutionary theories, with a focused sensitivity to the migration of ideas and aesthetic development as expressed by a wide range of artists who employ innovative practices. Over the past two decades, Franklin Parrasch Gallery has established a profile of exhibiting Los Angeles artists whose careers emerged in the 1960s and whose aesthetic alignment with Minimalism developed independently from that of their East Coast contemporaries. Through numerous group exhibitions, the gallery has explored artistic philosophies specific to West Coast subcultures and how these sensibilities informed the works of Los Angeles artists of this time period.

From 2011-2013, Franklin Parrasch Gallery operated a satellite exhibition space in Chelsea at 548 West 22nd Street, New York City. Exhibitions in this location focused on cross-generational examinations of ideas, designed in great part to question the standards of contemporary programming and draw attention to the commingling and exchange of ideas over time. These concepts will continue to be driving forces at Parrasch Heijnen.
