pastaRAMEN
"Influenced by the original 1950s concept at a Tokyo restaurant, Kabenoana – meaning “hole in the wall” – we brought Wafu Italian to you in New York, Miami, and Los Angeles as pastaRAMEN, an invite-only omakase meal in luxe and elusive pop-up settings. Now that we have shown pastaRamen off to the country, we are thrilled to reintroduce the concept as an elegant Italian ramen shop in the streets of Montclair, New Jersey.pastaRAMEN, the first-ever Italian ramen shop, is a perfect marriage of Japanese and Italian culture and cuisine. Sensational and sacred, it blends meticulous techniques and deep flavors for an umami-rich taste, as strong as the love for an Italian grandmother's rustic cooking."

Our experience was definitely worth the hype! The atmosphere is great, but be prepared for a loud environment. The servers were all very helpful and knowledgeable of the restaurant and its menu. Now for the food.. I'm honestly beyond impressed at the success in making Italian and Japanese fusion work so well. It's a fun concept with great execution. Everything was very tasty, and had plenty of flavor balance between the two themes. I will definitely be returning when I can snag another reservation!
Oh my, this is now my new favorite restaurant. My husband and I got the omakase because it was our first time and wanted to try a little bit of everything. Every single dish was made to perfection. The waiter was also very nice and frequently checked in. The food came out quickly and tasted like perfection. The hostesses were also extremely nice. While I wish the reservations weren’t so hard to make, I can appreciate that the small dining room makes it so that you’re receiving your food very quickly and the wait staff is able to give you their full attention. I will absolutely be back!
Delicious! All the dishes are very flavorful. Bao buns are always a good choice and the shrimp scampi is a staple. The new truffle dinner from the updated fall menu was a good change of pace as we have dined here a few times. The music could be lowered a pinch but the ambiance is great.Food: 5/5
Food was okay. Very overly priced and everything was covered in Parmesan cheese. We had an 8:30 reservation for 3 people, and when we arrived we had to wait, which is fine. However, they sat 3 people at a table clearly meant for two, and the hostess said they could do nothing about it when there were other open tables. After waiting a while, and then being thrown into that table it was not pleasant. We enjoyed the food and the atmosphere, we had wish they could be more accommodating and phrase things better instead of saying “there was nothing that they could do”. Definitely try for a one time thing, but will not be coming back.
Although I loved the atmosphere and the vibe of the place was absolutely energizing, I can't say that I loved the food. The presentation was great and it had flavor but it wasn't absolutely amazing. I only say this because others have visited the establishment and gave it raving reviews. I guess I had high expectations. The staff was wonderful and informative and the manager was accommodating. I did like the matcha lemonade that was quite tasty. I understand the menu is constantly changing so maybe next time I'll try something else.
The hype is real, y'all. What a night of delicious food. We were seated by one of the managers, and she noticed we brought our own wine without even taking the bottle out. I knew with that level of observation and attention we were in for a ride lol... Between the two of us, we ordered four appetizers and two entrees. The calamari fritti was light, perfectly seasoned, and almost melted in your mouth. Texture was not chewy like you might expect, but instead so soft. With just a splash of charred lemon, the flavor was familiar but elevated. Calamari is one of my favorite seafoods and this hit all the right spots. The octopus yakitori honestly left me speechless. I think it was my favorite dish of the night. An incredibly delicate bite and unlike any octopus I've ever had. Not chewy in the slightest. The bottoms were crispy, which added a little texture juxtaposition, and the flavor on its own was so good. No dipping sauce is required imo. I need this in my life again. The sunomono cucumber salad was the perfect palette cleanser in between so many different seafood flavors. Acidic, tangy, and all around delightful. The clams & foccacia felt the most familiar but delicious all the same. Briny, garlicky, slightly peppery... I would take one of the pieces of foccacia that was bathing in the creamy ponzu sauce and top with a clam and take one big bite. Great stuff. I didn't get a chance to try the shrimp scampi, but my girlfriend told me it was phenomenal. Overheard it's the chef's specialty. I'm sure I missed out on something awesome! However, I thoroughly enjoyed my mochi ramen cacio e pepe. A creamy and cheesy pasta that tasted a bit nutty. I was fascinated by the presentation and how the cheese was dry, but as soon as it touched moisture, it thickened in your mouth, almost with a grainy texture. It was a lovely dish. Overall, what an awesome experience. I'll need to come back and try the things I didn't get a chance to. Thanks for the food!
We made our reservation for a Sunday night about a month in advance, and we were so excited to finally see what all the hype was about! Food: We went ALL out on this, and everything we ate was excellent. First, the restaurant is BYO, but we opted for 2 of the mocktails. Both the lemon matcha and the watermelon yuzu drink were delicious. For starters, we got the cacio e pepe gyoza and the parmigiano bao. Both were excellent! Then, we decided to try 3 of the ramen dishes because they all sounded so tasty and we figured we might as well! The shrimp scampi had a nice garlic flavor and our server also recommended the corn and crab ragu - super good! My favorite, however, was the truffle ramen on the special menu. It had fresh truffle on top and had a very nice flavor. Service: Our server was friendly, and the entire staff worked quickly to clear plates away, etc. We did feel unnecessarily rushed, however. We completely understand that a restaurant like this wants to turn tables quickly, but reservations did have a 90 minute limit. When we wanted to order something else at the 45 minute mark, it was met with a bit of surprise and a comment along the lines of “I think you have enough time for that.” We had considered ordering dessert as well still with plenty of time, but didn’t feel welcome to do so. I can see how these tactics would be needed for tables hanging around and talking, but since we were ordering food, it felt unnecessary. Atmosphere: The appearance of the restaurant was cool - it was dark, the murals on the walls were neat, and the music was vibey. However, between the music and the conversations of those around us, it was SO LOUD. The restaurant wasn’t even full when our server was telling us the specials, and we could barely hear her it might be helpful to have a printed specials menu for this reason. Additionally, our table was squeezed between 2 other parties and we had to move our table just so I could get out. It wasn’t a very comfortable or enjoyable ambiance overall. In all, the food was excellent, but the rest of it led us to decide we probably wouldn’t be back any time soon. Glad we had the experience, however.
From the moment we entered everyone was very nice and welcoming and our server was an absolute gem. They were very accommodating with the allergies we had at the table and everything they recommended was delicious. We tried a little bit of everything and the Waygu is a definite must try as well as the calamari friti so so so good!!! The servers and entire staff was very attentive you could ask anyone there for anything and they were more than happy to help. Food and service aside the atmosphere could be better it's very small and the music is a little too loud makes it hard to hear what the server is saying. The tables are also VERY close to each other and it feels like they are definitely trying to cram as much people in there as possible. They should look into opening a larger restaurant to keep up with the hype. Dietary restrictions: They were very accommodating with this they put any dressing or sauces on the side that had tree nuts Kid-friendliness: Ok for older kids but nothing younger than 7 I would say because they don't have highchair and it's too small for strollers
Food is INCREDIBLE!!! Every single thing on the menu is delicious and comes out quickly. Atmosphere/service are only 4 stars because the tables are packed in TIGHT and the music can be a little loud for how small the space is. They definitely try to flip tables quickly because of how they are always sold out, but it's still worth it if you can get a reservation. Vegetarian options: Tofu Bao and mochi ramen
I can’t say enough great things about pastaramen. I will admit I came in with expectations that this place was all about the instagram hype and wouldn’t live up. I made a reservation about 2 weeks prior, and it was completely necessary because every table was full. We brought our own wine, but you can purchase mock tails or get alcohol delivered which was nice. The ambiance was dark and romantic, but with loud lively music. Now for the food. To me, the quality was that of Michelin star locations. We started with the porchetta bao buns and I would live the rest of my life only eating those and be happy. They were perfectly marinated, juicy with the perfect balance of meat to fat. We decided to try 3 dishes, the sea urchin special of the night, the risotto and the cacio e pepe mazemen. For me, the special was the highlight of the meal. My friend loved the risotto, but we would both pass up the cacio Pepe between the other choices. Every dish was full of flavor between the miso and Italian cheeses. Next time I come I’m going for the Omakase!
