Story

Paulina Lake is one of the twin crater lakes in Newberry Crater, central Oregon, United States (the other being East Lake). It is located 6331ft above sea level in the Deschutes National Forest near La Pine. The lake's primary inflow is seepage from East Lake, snow melt, and hot springs, and its outflow is Paulina Creek, a tributary of the Deschutes River. It has an area of 1531acre, a volume of 249850acre.ft, a maximum depth of 250ft, a shore length of about 6.7mi, and a residence time of about 46 years. The lake is classified as mesotrophic, with a transparency of approximately 13.1ft. It is about 40ft lower and one mile west of its twin, East Lake.Paulina Lake sits within the Newberry Crater, formed from over 500,000 years of volcanic activity. The lake bears the name of Paulina, a Snake Indian.Recreational ActivitiesPaulina Lake supports a number of recreational activities, including camping, hiking, fishing, kayaking, canoeing and paddle-boarding. A 10 mph speed limit on the lake prohibits motorized high speed watersports such as waterskiing and jet skis, which protects the lake as a popular fishing destination.Once devoid of fish, the lake is now regularly stocked by the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife, and is known for its large number of kokanee salmon and brown trout. Other fish found in the lake include rainbow trout, tui chub, and blue chub. The largest brown trout caught on record in the State of Oregon – a whopping 28 lb., 5 oz. fish – was caught at Paulina in 2002, eclipsing previous records set at the same lake.

Bittersweet experience here recently, first time I've been there in 20 years: -Place was much more run down than in past including cabins. -Had to wait 30 mins for room to be made after check in time. -Service was much worse than last experience. -Be sure to ask for prices before eating at restaurant, they are not displayed and may be a shocking number. They may not have enough food there to serve everyone a meal they want. $21 for fish and chips is a bit absurd? -Don't be surprised if you leave feeling ripped off after stay, both boat prices and cabin prices way overpriced for what it was. -Water pipes in cabins made with lead pipes and toilet is stained RED from mineral content. Ever go to the bathroom in a RED porcelain toilet? -Purchased almost-dead worms for fishing from shop and it kind of ruined my fishing experience. In all of my life I have never purchased worms that died same day and were never given soil to live in. I spent hundreds of dollars to stay here, travel here, saved a week of vacation time, and fish here and you give me almost dead worms that I NOW realize while fishing on the lake...at a WORLD RENOWN FISHING SPOT! WTF. YOU got me there Paulina Lake, a place where you might have a good time but more likely a mediocre or sub-par time.

We've only stayed at the restaurant for a few minutes. Really nothing special besides the BEAUTIFUL view!!! Right on the lake! We had hot chocolate and cake. It was too sweet on both

We suggested Paulina Lake Lodge to friends who were visiting from France as a place with lovely geologic features and natural beauty. They reserved a cabin for 3 nights. The cabin was very run down and shabby, the shower stained red from the water, and the hosts rude. They left after 2 days, and were told the 3rd night would be refunded. That was a lie. DO NOT PATRONIZE THIS PLACE!

Terrible stay. Water in cabin isn't potable. Had to bring our own linens, towels, pots and pans. Changed our snow cat price from 100 to 150 because they had to "haul all of our stuff". My question to that is: who doesn't have stuff, and we had to pack all the extra linens, so why are we getting charged for it. The couple who owns it: the man is very nice and helpful, wife is very unpleasant and almost the least helpful person running accommodations I've ever met. Don't expect any help from her. Just more charges. Never again
