The Pho is good with the flavorful broth, but a little disappointed with only 3 pieces beef balls in No.6 pho. The egg rolls are yummy, but the grilled chicken in the spring rolls is quite tough. The staff is nice, but only provided water to one of us.
I've been coming to this place for almost 20 years. It's always been some of the best food around. The food and coffee is on another level. The inside is usually quiet and has nice music playing. The only gripe is that I wish they would come to the table and fill my water more often. Overall amazing experience. Rating 9.3/10Food: 5/5
Pho Hai Van is a small, physically unimpressive restaurant crammed into a shopping strip off Scarborough Rd in Houston, an area with a significant Vietnamese population. The inside is mostly hard wood tables and wood chairs with a few wood-bench booths. However non-aesthetically pleasing it is, the food more than makes up for! I've never been one to care much for appearances and Pho Hai Van delivers here! Their spring rolls always seem fresh and their pho always hot and delicious. Lately I've been ordering the B6 "Bun Xao Xa Ot", a vermicelli bowl with stir-fried beef you can also get chicken green onions, peanuts, lemongrass, and just the right amount of chili peppers to give it a little kick. I admit I'm not a fan of spicy food but the flavor combination plus the little kiss of spice that it gives you really makes this dish a favorite of mine! The price is also good as this will top out around $17 or so with the spring rolls. Don't be fooled by the appearance- this is a good restaurant that also has the benefit of being next to a Vietnamese grocery store named My Quang that really gives you a glimpse of Vietnamese culture!
I finally found my place for bố lúc lắc shaken beef. Theirs tastes just like the kind I had from a restaurant on Bellaire Blvd when I was a kid which has since been gone with the wind. I don’t know what cut of beef they use and the fair price I think it was $14 reflects that, which is ok with me. Many other places charge filet mignon price but serve it with less expensive cuts. Perfectly caramelized, succulent, and garlicky. I ordered it with the fried rice - apparently there’s no tomato in it. My partner’s spicy lemongrass tofu vermicelli was delicious as well. It looked dry but it was flavorful and wasn’t desiccated or overcooked at all. We got a side of the pho broth so we could get an idea I’d say we were both underwhelmed, it tasted a bit too fatty. The taste was a bit bland but maybe intentional. By itself it was 7/10 compared to what I’m used to from restaurants on Bellaire. Since I grew up in Alief, I never sought out another Viet area outside of SW/W Houston but I was visiting family on this side and I’m so happy I had the chance to check this out! Our server was great too, he helped me pick between this dish and bun rieu.
Food was really good. When order came incorrectly, the waiter corrected immediately. Great service, great food.Food: 5/5
It was great! Authentic, healthy the food fed my soul. Thank you so much!! Loved the coffee, phô and rolls... Fabulous+!Food: 5/5
Haven’t found a better Vietnamese restaurant in the area. We moved out of Houston, but still make it a mandatory stop when passing by, because yummy! Huge portions, all seasoned to perfection, great prices. Spring rolls and Vermicelli bowls are a must try.
Worse restaurant experience I’ve ever had. On 06/22/23 I came in for lunch for the first time ever, looking to find a new pho stop. However all I found was a roach in my pho after a couple of bites. It was the most disgusting thing I’ve ever experienced. The server didn’t even apologized. I immediately called the Houston Health Department to report. I received a follow up call today 06/27/23 by a health inspector stating the restaurant was shut down today as the inspector found multiple roaches in the kitchen area and had restaurant hire an exterminator. DO NOT EAT HERE! Restaurants should always prioritize excellent hygiene and environment when dealing with other food.
The food was great! There was a hiccup on the order, but to their credit they made it right! The atmosphere is a bit off because it's in a strip mall, and the radio is on, but so is the TV. At least they aren't loud. Great food tho!Food: 5/5
The restaurant is beautiful and clean. The server came over took our order and that was the last time we saw her. The cooks brought out the food and also disappeared. I wanted to ask for some cilantro and jalapeño to go with my dry vermicelli noodles, and had to get up myself and walk to the kitchen to ask. I waved at the waitress multiple times and she just looked at me and walked by me. The food was not good. They gave me a tiny dish of fish sauce for a big bowl of vermicelli. I wanted to ask for more fish sauce but again everyone disappeared. The food came out not even 10 minutes after we ordered. I could tell by the dried out cold chicken they precook everything in the morning and heat it up. We had to go upfront to pay because once they take your order you never see a server again. We will never come back here
