Story

Our family background has revolved around professional auto repair in Plymouth for over 50 years and the knowledge of our profession has been passed down from generation to generation. While the vehicles and the technology behind them have drastically changed since 1959 our founding principles have stayed the same. At Plymouth VIP Auto, you become part of the family the minute you walk through the door. If your vehicle needs auto repair, Plymouth has many different shops to choose from. What makes us different is our high standards for both car and customer service. All of our technicians are ASE Master & ASE Level 1 Advanced Engine Performance Specialists and required to take a minimum of 40 Hours of training every year to make sure they stay current in the ever changing automotive industry. Losing your car for a day can be very frustrating. That is why we offer free loaner vehicles, located onsite, for immediate checkout. If a loaner vehicle will not work for you, no problem – we also offer a courtesy local shuttle service. Busy schedules may not allow you to bring in your car during open hours, so we offer Early Bird & Night Owl drop off for your convenience! If you prefer to wait during your vehicle’s service, take advantage of our waiting area equipped with comfortable leather couches, free Wifi, beverages, Netflix, and even Nintendo Wii. I had a flat tire on my front driver's side, and this place was close to work and I was recommended by a co-worker to go here. I was able to drop my car off over lunch for them to take a look at and try to repair. At about 1:30 I received a call that there was a gash in the tire and it could not be repaired, I would have to get new ones. I received 3 quotes at first for 4 news tires ranging from $600 - $800. When I asked how much for their lower end tires for only 2 - it came to $361, since I had no other option I went with this. They also offered me a free 50-point inspection - so I took it. Later in the day I was called to let me know my tires were fixed and that they found some other "issues." They gave me a quote to fix these "issues" and for 2 more new tires and an alignment that came to over $2500. Needless to say I did not take them up on their offer. I picked up the car and paid what they quoted me. The next day I received a customer service call asking me how everything was and at that point it was fine. It wasn't until a couple days later when I started to really drive the car around that I found it was pulling to the right really bad and my steering wheel was shaking something awful. I talked to my dad, who is a mechanical genius but lives in another state, and he said he would take a look at it the next time I was home. Come to find out, they didn't put the two new tires on the front, they put them on the back and moved my back tires to the front. Now this may be "industry standard" in MN; but I did not ask for this. I wanted the two new tires on the front. Also those "issues" that they wanted to charge me $2500 to fix - were nothing - nothing at all wrong. I was able to get 2 new tires (this time to put on the front) at shop in my hometown for $200. I doubt I will return, even to use the free car wash I received. And overall they were very nice while trying to rip me off on fixes that my car does not need.

Up until today, I would have recommended this shop in a heartbeat and did recommend it to my girlfriend, but after today, If I could give zero stars, it would be because of Cody Giguere - he is a service 'advisor' at VIP and he has officially and personally caused two customers to never return after the fiasco and blatant lying that occurred today. Dropped off my girlfriend's car at 8:30 for a 10:00 appointment this morning for a check engine light we wanted diagnosed. Cody gave a range of $50 - $100 for the diagnostic...that's fine and a known tactic so you can hope for the low end and they can charge $99.95...whatever - I would have been fine with that overpriced diagnostic had it occurred in a timely manner. Cody told us that he would get it in and on the rack and call us within an hour or two to let us know what the diagnostic check revealed and what recommended repairs would cost. We not only didn't receive a call, (we gave both our numbers in case one or the other were busy), but my girlfriend actually had to call at 4:30 (after not receiving a call, text, fax, etc...for eight hours). She was then told that the repairs would take two hours or more to complete (service closes at five). I showed up at 4:45 to see what the issue was and was given a $106.95 bill for the diagnostic. When confronted about the fact that the recommended repairs weren't acted upon, I was given a fairly blank stare and then Cody proceeded to tell me that it took his service tech from 9:00 am till 4:30 pm to come up with these recommended repairs. I would say that this makes me question the service technician's ability, but it was far too easy to see that Cody was lying to try and cover his incompetence. Once I realized I was talking to a brick wall, I paid and left and will never return to this station for repairs. Its sad because I used to trust them, but Cody has made that impossible. I recommend never going to Plymouth VIP Auto and even more so, never go anywhere Cody is working, unless you want to be lied to and want to feel like you're talking to the worlds most incompetent human being.

I went here a number of times for oil changes and had good experiences. After my second repair/oil change they handed me a quote for repairs over $1000. One of the specific repairs, my lower gasket, apparently needed to be replaced in it’s entirety, and consisted ~$700 of the total quote. I went to a trusted mechanic my family has been to for over 20 years. He took a look, and lo and behold all my car needed was $30 in parts, if that. I’m not sure if VIP Auto employs predatory tactics against those such as myself with very limited automobile knowledge, or whether it’s general incompetence where they just replace a chunk of my engine instead of finding the problem (and pocket some extra money as well). I never approached them about this quote, as I was too angry to go back. Your mileage may vary with this shop, but I would be very wary if you’re not overly savvy with cars. EDIT: I forgot to mention they couldn’t figure out why my wife’s car wouldn’t start. Evidently they didn’t bother to check the battery, because it was 30% larger than it should have been (as in the sides were bulging). They also charged me ~$50-60 for that one. Buyer beware. EDIT 2: I neglected to mention the second oil change was so quickly (~1000 miles) after my first there because they told me I had an oil leak. I went there to have it fixed, but all they did was replace my oil again without fixing it! Evidently it was a communications mishap, but this place has obvious problems.

Plymouth VIP's customer service was outstanding. I had an engine noise and they were able to get my car in that day and let me know what wrong with a detailed summary. Gabby was wonderful to talk and text with. They are definitely up with the times being able to text their clients & send diagnostics via text as well. I will be recommending them to everyone and will continue to use their services.
