About

This is the official page of the Prince William County Animal Shelter. This site is not monitored 24 hours a day and posts and questions will only be answered during business hours. For animal related emergencies, please call 703-792-6500.

Story

Constructed in 1975, the Animal Shelter is an open admission facility that houses sick, injured, or lost animals as a place for owners to look for their lost pets. We also take in the County's most dangerous animals and exotics.

Once a pet is surrendered to the Shelter, the pet is examined by our veterinarian, provided with applicable vaccinations, and a behavior evaluation is administered. Homeless pets who are healthy or have treatable ailments, and are not dangerous, are available for adoption.

I get the cost of a animal and saving a animal from tragedy but remember some stuff like 1: animal shelters cut costs by not doing certain stuff like deworming their effin cats. 2: the shelter will lie about the animals being abused or anything to get them out of their facility. 3: the shelter charge you for a pet that needs more work done then a car. 4: because of their laziness and carelessness and so called love I just spent over 1000 dollars on things that thing effin place was supposed to do and because it wasn’t don’t it caused other things that ran the bill so high I wanted to drop off the cats to them and have them deal with it and go to a breeder.

A well maintained and managed facility. Staff is very friendly and helpful. They accept animals that can no longer be cared for. Came by for the Empty the Shelter event. Happy to see how many people came out to support animal adoption.

I adopted my dog from the shelter and have been there a few times to look at cats. when I adopted I paid $45 for it and the front desk staff was helpful and had info about my dog available. Times I visited the kennels it was clean, each dog had a bed and toy. Some dogs had bandanas on. When they showed me my dog we went out to a pretty garden area that was also full of toys and even a small doggy pool. The cat area is real small, and they told me they could not display all kitties because of lack of space. Maybe they need more resources, but it looks to me that they are doing the best with what they have.

After i read a few inaccurate reviews i would like to provide a review too. I adoped my dog there myself and visit regularly as i volunteer there. Of course the shelter is crowded, because the board of supervisors of Prince William County does not approve the new Shelter to be built and they keep putting it off for 2020. This means for example, not all the cats available can be on display for adoption, because they have no physical space for them other than a back room. Stafford has 1/4 of the animals (Yearly) of what the PWC Shelter has yet the new shelter that was supposed to be built for ~ 6 million got cancelled and is back in planning. Stafford got a new one for 5 million. Regarding the staff: if someone drops off their animal everybody that loves animals is a bit nervous. People at the shelter cannot understand how someone could just abandon a family member. I had never seen an employee there beeing rude or doing a bad job at taking care of the dogs. They have limited resources and yes are sometimes overcrowded and have a lot of government regulations. But they are doing their jobs and the animals there are well taken care of.

Went there to "adopt" a guinea pig that my daughter and I had seen listed on line. I was pleased with the entire experience at the shelter. The shelter was clean, and well organized, and the animals were well cared for. In addition the staff was friendly and efficient, and provided the information I needed in a timely manner, and after we selected our new pet, the paperwork was done promptly and we were on our way home. I would definitely go there again in the future if we decide to add another pet to our home. Yes, you do have to sign paperwork saying you will take care of the pet, and yes, there are rules/requirements etc, and yes, they do get busy and you have to wait your turn. Some of the reviews here painted a negative overall picture of the shelter, but I was left with a very different impression.
