Dominican Cuisine, Catering and Special Events

Story

Puerto Viejo is a Dominican Bistro, located in the evolving gem that is Prospect Heights. Upon entering, you are transported to an old port in La Hispaniola, today known as the Dominican Republic, the first colony in the New World.

Puerto Viejo’s cuisine draws from both authentic Dominican recipes, passed down through generations, and the progressive influences of today. You can enjoy traditional Dominican favorites like mofongo or try a Puerto Viejo original like crudo majado, a raw vegan dish.

The blend of the old and the new gives Puerto Viejo the comfort of a family home. The use of recycled furniture and materials shows a conscious effort towards sustainability. The atmosphere coupled with the taste of a home cooked menu is what makes Puerto Viejo not just a restaurant, but an experience.

The captivating, warm and friendly environment permeates, giving it a vibe that only Brooklyn can offer. It has the “mom and pop” essence that makes you feel like you are back at home. Open for breakfast, lunch, and dinner - Puerto Viejo is Dominican cuisine at its best.

I usually go here for the lunch special (which by the way is over priced) The portions are always small but whatever, it's close to my job. Today I went and the waiter/cashier told me I missed the lunch special and the order of pork and rice would now be $14 and change but you get a pan of rice and a pan of pork. I said o.k fine. Long story short when I get back to work and open my food, I have a full plate of rice and a few pieces of pork tossed around a pan to try to make it look like a full plate. When I called the restaurant, (less than 5 minutes after leaving) they say there's absolutely nothing they can do they only give 9oz of pork on a plate. You were expecting a full pan he asked, I didn't say that. He said.( Mind you he didn't say a quarter of a pan either which is exactly what I got.) I have no problem with a restaurants pricing but I don't like to be lied to prior to my order. I like to know what I'm getting. I would never in my life pay over $14 for a full small pan of rice and a quarter of pork. They are nuts. I would never spend another dime in there no matter how hungry I am.

The ambiance was great. Drinks were good. Service was fast and efficient. The tables are very close to each other. The menu is nicely well laid out. Reasonably priced. The execution of the food was not the best. I would definitely go back.

I've been here a few times over the past couple years. The food has been typically good, but there is some general messiness that could be improved. The decor is great and welcoming, and the live music on the weekends is a nice touch. It can be difficult to get a seat on the weekend, however. Also, service can be a little slow when it does get busy. The reason I can only give 3 stars is that they messed up my pick-up order last week. I ordered pernil (she repeated my order back to me over the phone) but when I got home, it was roast chicken and not pork. Also, the yuca, a staple or Dominican food, was undercooked and really hard and dry. I don't know how you mess that dish up. Everything else, including the maduros and cubano, were especially delicious.

Empanadas and pollo al horno yum. We were the last people here before it closed and everyone let us chill and take our time with the last drink.
