Story

The Rex Allen Museum is located in one of Willcox's oldest commercial buildings. Constructed in the early 1890's of adobe, it was purchased in 1897 by Josef Schwertner and operated as the Schley Saloon from 1897-1919. The front of the Museum has been restored to resemble the original saloon storefront.

Mission

To preserve and maintain the artifacts and life story of Rex Allen, the cowboy, movie star, singer and entertainer who was born in Willcox, grew up in Willcox and always referred to Willcox as his home town. To operate a museum through which the cultural preservation, public education and history of the ranching heritage and integrity of Willcox, the Sulphur Springs Valley area and the Southwest will be perpetuated.

The Rex Allen Museum is a wonderful time travel trip into the great era of crooning cowboys dressed in oh so fancy clothes with sequins everywhere and such bright colors. The pictures and memorabilia show a man with a 5 star history. To see the people with whom he was friends, and who supported the museum is very very impressive. However if you do not know the era you will be under-impressed and wonder what all the hubbub is about. As I was with people who had listened to Rex on the radio in their childhood, and seen his movies as youngsters, it was eye opening. For the western enthusiast this is a huge nugget of information and memories. So worth the two dollar admission fee.
