I don’t want to have to do this, but for those looking to join this school, I would warn you to be careful. Having recently moved to Portland, my boyfriend wanted to get back into martial arts and convinced me to give it a try too. We went to check out a few different gyms in the area, including River City Warriors. The owner’s high pressure sales tactics made us both feel uncomfortable. When my boyfriend later went back to the gym to attend one of the classes that the owner had said could be paid for on a drop-in basis for a $10 fee, he was told that he wasn’t a good fit for the school, and that he should look for another school. We were both in disbelief that he should be banned from the school just because he wasn’t comfortable signing paperwork to start a one-month trial membership, as we were still looking at other gyms. There are other good schools in the area that didn’t try to push us into a membership like this. I can’t say anything bad about the instruction or the other students here, and everyone has to make their own decision where they want to train, but for us, this was not the right place. Note: I just want to make it clear that I can only speak to what I experienced personally. My boyfriend and I went together to the gym and I sat and observed the two classes he was allowed to attend. As for the owner Joe's accusations, I witnessed nothing inappropriate about his attitude while we were there. He simply didn't feel comfortable signing up until he was ready, and he let Joe know this.

My son is still new to his Jiu-jitsu class, but is really enjoying the experience and I can see that the lessons he learns in class (like learning from people you interact with and general respect) are going to be applicable to his everyday experience. He's learning and growing while thinking that he's just being awesome. Thank you to all the fantastic instructors!

I have been going here since April of 2016. I attend BJJ and Muay Thai Monday through Friday at noon. It was easy to get addicted to the training with staff and students who make you feel so welcome. Joe and Eric also helped me create a private self defense seminar for some of my closest friends and family members. Everyone had tons of fun and learned some things that could ultimately save their lives. I highly recommend this gym especially if you want to learn self defense skills. I'm glad I had a seminar for my friends but to truly get into the proper mindset and create life saving habits you need to attend classes on a regular basis. This is a great place to get those new skills and save yourself from some potentially dangerous situations.

At this academy, the focus is on self-defense and safety, not competition, although there are plenty of competitors here. Women, children, men, of all shapes and sizes are welcome and train here. Everyone should benefit from learning GJJ, not just the tough guys. If you want a place that is friendly where you can learn all aspects of self-defense short of fire-arms, this is where it's at. You will be welcomed and treated with respect with the aim of helping you achieve your martial arts related goals. You cannot go wrong training martial arts at RCW. OSS!!
