About

A remarkable resting place for souls of all faiths. Dating from 1719, the Cemetery is also Washington’s oldest cemetery.

Story

Owned by the governing body of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, Rock Creek Parish — the only surviving colonial church in Washington, D.C. — the Cemetery is part of 100 acres of land donated by Colonel John Bradford in 1719. In 1840, an Act of Congress designated the grounds as a public cemetery for the city of Washington.

Early in the 20th century, the Church sold off 14 of the original 100 acres to accommodate construction of New Hampshire Avenue, leaving the remaining 86-acre churchyard for use of the Parish. Although Rock Creek Cemetery remains under the stewardship of St. Paul’s Church, the burial grounds are nondenominational and open to all.

Rock Creek Cemetery serves as the final resting place to some of Washington’s most notable residents.

I visited Rock Creek after spending several crowded days at the Smithsonian, and was double struck by the peacefulness of this cemetery. The grounds are lovely and in April there were many trees and shrubs in blossom. I spent a couple hours there on a Sunday morning and was surprised at the paucity of visitors.

Such a beautiful cemetery. Always a favorite to visit on a nice day outside.

One of the best cemeteries you will ever visit. The Mausoleums are plentiful and this place is just incredibly peaceful. Paul Tully's grave wins top prize for creativity. A chair, with a coffee cup and a newspaper that has the front headline of Bill Clinton winning the presidential election back in the 90's. Visit in the fall when all the leaves are changing color.

Beautiful cemetery where many big personalities are buried, including Alice Roosevelt, Gore Vidal, and what feels like all owners of the Dupont Mansions. Also home to beautiful sculptures like "Grief."
