Story

Angelus-Rosedale Cemetery is a cemetery in Los Angeles at 1831 West Washington Boulevard in the Pico-Union district, southwest of Downtown. It was founded as Rosedale Cemetery in 1884, when Los Angeles was a small city of around 28,000 people, on 65acre of land running from Washington to Venice Boulevard (then 16th Street) between Normandie Avenue and Walton and Catalina Streets, and often used by California politicians, notably former Mayors of the City of Los Angeles. The interments include pioneers and members of leading families who had a conspicuous place in Los Angeles institutions and the state.Rosedale was the first cemetery in Los Angeles open to all races and creeds, and was the first to adopt the concept of the new approach of design called lawn cemeteries, where the grounds are enhanced to surround the burial places of the dead with beautiful and decorative trees, shrubs, flowers, natural scenery and works of monumental art. Among the more traditional structures, headstones and mausoleums, the cemetery also has several pyramid crypts. In 1887, the second crematory in the United States was opened at Rosedale Cemetery. It was also the first crematory west of the Rocky Mountains. The initial cremation took place on June 16, when the body of Mrs. Olive A. Bird (c. 1845–1886), wife of prominent physician O.B. Bird, was incinerated. By 1913, there had been 2,392 cremations performed at Rosedale. Next to the cemetery at 1605 S. Catalina Street, is another cremation facility, the domed, observatory shaped Chapel of the Pines Crematory.

Worst place to bury anyone!!!!I I have family here...my mother is always close to tears when i bring her to visit her mother (it wasn't that bad in 2002.. but notice it needed some watering back then)and tells us never to bury her here!!!' They put big signs out now that says due to the start of the drought they're conserving water????!!!! Guess they been conserving since 2003.. not only that.we finally drove through the entire cemetery.....some of the headstones have been desecrated... knocked over!!! Trashed thrown over near the back end...You have precious family members, BABIES...civil war soliders buried there... without the American flags..just the poles are there.. someone once tried to put a tiny flag...tattered and torn but.. it's gone now too.. They spray painted on beautiful crypts...They way they painted over the crypts... it's sad. Some of these souls have been here since the 1700"s.. there's pot holes, cracked streets...Even the old trees are hanging in awful ways and damaged...Yes if you look hard enough, you can see... it once use to be such a beautiful place but now?????!!!!! We even tried bringing in water hoses to help water our loved ones area, sweeping and picking up dead weeds..that makes LOUD crunching noises as e try not to cry. Dear Lord!!! Only the front entrance is kept up... but look past it... and see... all the others.. left behind...their final resting places.... even the weeds died.. .. and hard to walk on.. Rosedale needs an overhaul 😭....Mayor Garcetti, pleaseeeeeee help!!!!!

Worst cemetery. Grass is dry, the roads have so many potholes and dirty. If I had money to exhume my grandmother and aunts to another cemetery such as Forest Lawn I would with no hesitation.

Historic Los Angeles cemetery. Although Hattie McDaniel is here, the entirety of the graveyard is even more interesting. First, there are incredible family crypts, pyramids, and statuary here. It's fascinating to walk through and see the various sections that document Los Angeles' history. Rosedale was also the first cemetery open to all races and religions in Los Angeles. While it is true that the grass is brown in many places, I don't feel like it detracts from the place. There is a beauty and peacefulness here. Lots of old trees and consequently, some urban wildlife. I regularly see a pair of red tailed hawks that live here. While visiting hours are limited, it's worth taking some time to explore this beautiful bit of Los Angeles history.
