Rye Restaurant

About

Rye, a restaurant celebrating midwestern recipes, traditions, and culture using local Kansas & Missouri flavors and farmers.

Story

Rye restaurant in Leawood, Kansas, just south of Kansas City, celebrates the Midwestern foods that chefs Megan and Colby Garrelts grew up eating. Both of these chefs are proud to be from the Midwest and Rye gives them the opportunity to showcase dishes that they have enjoyed with several generations of their families. They pay homage to those heritage dishes that the Midwest is known for – succulent smoked pork chops, aged steaks, fried chicken, vegetables just off the stove, Parker House rolls, freshly-made seasonal pies, fruit cobblers, and specialty cakes to name a few. Their food at Rye takes traditional dishes and gives them a chef’s point of view, while preserving the important heritage of the dish. Chefs Megan and Colby use fresh, locally-sourced ingredients and products including produce from their family farm, Flat Rock Field in Parker, Kansas. The beverages served at Rye also have a local focus with a selection of spirits and beers from Missouri and Kansas. There is an assortment of classic cocktails as well as regionally-inspired beverages such as The State Fair. Rye is open for lunch and dinner seven days a week, with brunch served on Saturday and Sunday.

Always wonderful food at this place, from brunch to dinner. Love how they casually make menu changes at various times too. Service is good, though at times doesn't seem as friendly as I would expect. As for the picture, I have never seen Sugar Cream Pie on a menu anywhere but Northern Indiana. It was amazing.

Midwest meets refined dining. There were several things that I wanted to try on the menu and will gladly go back to try the things I didn't get. I ended up getting the pan-seared whitefish which perfectly blended flavors and texture. I was wanting more sauce, but by the end I had sauce left. I also got a cocktail and was pleasantly surprised to get a mini bottle to refill my glass. And I got the cake instead of the pie and found it be decadent, but light. The food was all around excellent. Service and atmosphere was also enjoyable, though not as important to me.

Fried Chicken is excellent. It's not often you get really tasty crispy fried chicken that's isn't too greasy. If two people are going to get the chicken, just get the whole bird. It's a better deal and you just take home the leftovers. The baked potato is about the size of your head. Mac n cheese with bacon is even better than it sounds. Burnt end appetizer is probably some of the best burnt ends I've had in KC. Too bad it's only an app. Atmosphere is okay. It's a kinda tightly spaced and lit a little too low to read the wine list. Luckily they have a very good beer selection. Our server was perfect. Very accommodating, didn't try to up-sell us on anything and didn't hover over us.

Upscale place, great staff, friendly service. The price point is above average, but the food is worth it. 2 thumbs up!
