Originally named for the Texas folk hero, Sam Houston, who traveled extensively in the western reaches of Louisiana, Sam Houston Jones was givien its current name in honor of the state's 37th governor, who was instrumental in setting aside this land.
Sam Houston Jones State Park is 1,087 acres that includes ponds, 5 hiking/biking trails, playgrounds, picnic areas with barbeque pits, restrooms, a boat launch and 2 pavilions. Many visitors also enjoy fishing along the west fork of the Calcasieu River.
Park visitors may even catch a glimpse of deer, squirrels, bobcats, rabbits, gators, nutria, racoons, ducks, geese or some of the other diverse birdlife of the region.
