Encompassing 133 square miles of areas in Colorado Springs and unincorporated portions in the Falcon area of El Paso County, District 49 is one of Colorado's fastest growing school districts. In the Colorado Springs area, well over 90 percent of annual growth is occurring in District 49. According to county records, there are more than 20,000 lots in the inventory of the school district's boundaries, which could double its current pupil count. During the 2015-2016 school year, District 49's educators began working with more than 20,000 students, as part of Colorado's 14th largest school district. The district currently contains nine elementary schools, three middle schools, three high schools, one alternative middle and high school and a blended-learning online academy, as well as several charter schools. It offers early childhood programs, special education inclusion, gifted and talented programs, vocational career academies, as well as maintain a working relationship with Pikes Peak Community College.
