Station 22 Cafe

About

Station 22 is a restaurant located in historic downtown Provo. We dish up your favorite comfort and soul foods from across our great nation.

Story

At Station 22, we dig way down deep into our American roots to bring you fresh, reinvented versions of family recipes, classic dishes and some new flavors you never imagined.

We love the concept and flavors of “vernacular cuisine”– foods that are rooted in specific regions and family traditions. Who doesn’t? These are the flavors of Grandma’s house, potlucks, family gatherings and small, family-run restaurants. I absolutely love to eat. But most importantly I love to eat foods that I connect with–foods that hearken back to warm times with family and friends. Times beyond us, that extend all the way back through our grandparents and beyond, from our now tiny branches down into our deepest roots.

Fun atmosphere, but the food was only okay. My friends all got chicken and waffles. I got the shrimp and grits. It was an interesting take on the original but the sauce was overpowering and too salty. I scraped most of it off the grit cakes, but my plate was swimming in it. My entree also had "seasonal vegetables" on the side. Baby carrots are not a seasonal vegetable. Basically, the entree was creative, but the side was boring. The service was okay. Our server was in such a rush that we couldn't really talk to her.

We went on a Thursday evening hoping it would be less busy than a weekend and we’d be able to get in quickly. When we arrived I counted 14 people seated at tables and another 8 in the waiting area. There were more tables empty than there were with people at them. When we asked about the wait we were informed it would be 20-25 minutes and it ended up being closer to 30. It appears they’re having issues with staffing as that’s the only explanation I can think of for why they’d have a 30 minute wait with more tables open than occupied. The food itself was decent. Nothing particularly noteworthy other than the tomato soup which was excellent. The variety of sodas is a fun twist but $4.50 for a single bottle is steep to say the least. Most of their drinks are cheaper at Pop’N’Sweets if you really are wanting to try one of the unique flavors. The service was good while we were eating but had to wait a very long time to get our check, and when we did they had overcharged our drinks. When I asked them about it they explained that they had recently raised their prices and hadn’t printed new menus yet. It felt a little dishonest as if they were hoping we just wouldn’t look closely at the check. To their credit they charged me the price printed on the menu. In summary, I had no major complaints about the food but the price combined with the long wait and questionable service left me convinced it isn’t worth going back.

One of my favorite restaurants! The food is all made fresh and is unique and delicious. The poutine is amazing, all of the burgers are great, and the pig and cheese is fantastic. The ambiance is really cool and typically the service if friendly and fast enough I don't notice it. It's great for a couple or a smaller group but not really set up for large groups in my opinion.

Station 22 is a delight! Their food is comforting but still has pleasant culinary twists. It's a place where foodies can take their non-foodie friends and everyone is satisfied, hipster without pretentiousness, comforting but new. The wall of carbonated beverages holds a wide variety of flavors and their dessert menu hits all the right notes. It is good for a classy (but not formal) get together, with repurposed items composing the decor. I've been going to it for years, and holds a special place in my taste buds.

We waited about 45 minutes to be seated on Friday night. Stewardess and waitress were great. I ordered the Jack Kerouac burger my wife ordered the Memphis chicken sandwich. My burger was overcooked and the char flavor overpowered the small amount of the delicious sauce. It was a disappointment. The chicken sandwich was juicy but the flavor was very one dimensional. The fries, beer battered and sweet potato, and fry sauce were excellent. Food gets a two, service a five.
