Beautiful little state park area out in the middle of nowhere... As you drive by it you think look at that little hill in the middle of a field.. So you turn off the main road and take a short drive up to the top to be blown away by the beauty.. You can look 365 degrees as far as you can see.. Great hill to walk, jog or bike up.. Nice clean restroom up at the top parking lot. Great potty break stop if your traveling through and check out the view

How big is the Poluse? I don't know, but you can see an awful lot of it from up here.

I took my three young boys (ages 2-11) here on a Thursday morning during summer break. They were a little bored during the 2-hour drive from Spokane (although I thought it was beautiful), but once we started climbing the butte they were captivated by the views. I was pleasantly surprised that we were the only ones at the summit during our entire stay, which was about an hour. We arrived around 11:30, parked at the south end of the viewing area, and set up a picnic blanket just off of the parking area. We enjoyed our lunch in peace and quiet 1,000 feet above the sprawling Palouse. My older boys enjoyed taking pictures and my youngest enjoyed watching the toy-sized tractors working the fields below. If you’re looking for a daytrip from Spokane to get the kids out of the house and away from the video games, Steptoe Butte is a wonderful option. And the kids will learn a bit about geology, too.

I was raised right at the base of Steptoe Butte on the Northside. When I was very young I remember the sound of the rock crusher running all night to build the road to the top. I live in Spokane now but never tire of going to the top of Steptoe Butte. In fact, I took the motorcycle to the top again just today. The 360° panoramic view of The Palouse is always beautiful.
