Taj Mahal is New Orleans' first Indian restaurant, opened in 1982, and found it's present home on Metairie road in 1992

Story

The late Har G. Keswani with his wife Anila Keswani opened Taj Mahal, to satisfy his creative urges for cooking, and to bring Indian Culture to New Orleans, thru FOOD! Nothing conveys culture like FOOD! Today you can find Anila Keswani hovering in the restaurant, like her living room, she greets everyone, with her jubilant heart, and makes sure no one leaves hungry.

These chefs know what they are doing. The sauces are creamy and flavorful and the tandoori was tender and well spiced. The mild actually was, though I hear it can be variable upon who is cooking. The samosas were enormous and tender. We got generous portions and plenty of rice to go around. The naan was soft and fresh. The restaurant is well decorated with art from India. The location is a little off of the road, so keep your eyes peeled. Parking available. Opens at 5:30 for dinner. Take-out available.

I guess I'm a regular! I like the staff, who are friendly and helpful, and I enjoy the range of dishes, though I could take a deal more heat in the vindaloo, and I'm amused by the fact that my regular request for mango lasso had led to it being added to the menu. I've eaten at Nirvana on Magazine, which is owned by the same family, and I like it, but I prefer the Taj Mahal.

Food was good. Interaction with the staff could have been more upbeat. It was very distant and our questions were met with what appeared to be an unwillingness to answer. "I don't know" was often said. Again the food was really good.

Absolutely love this place. They have a good quality buffet for lunch. The dinner quality is outstanding!! Make sure you order pickle with every meal.
