Story

The Museum's exhibits display the story of Texas Military Forces from 1823 and the first militia musters in Stephen F. Austin's Colony to the present day.The role of the Texas Military Forces in both war and peace is highlighted. We cover the forces of the State of Texas from 1823-1903. In 1903 with the formation of the National Guard, we concentrate solely on the story of the Texas National Guard including peacetime and their wartime service for WWI, WWII, Korea, and the Global War on Terror.

This is a great hidden gem inside Austin. Note you have to enter the military base to get there. Make sure all adults have a photo ID, and just tell the guard you are going to the museum and he will give directions from there. The museum is free, and there is quite a bit to see inside (donations accepted). Be sure to investigate all the areas, because the second half is hiding down a more narrow walkway in the back. Outside are a number of tanks, artillery, and a few other vehicles. It wasn't clear if kids could climb up on them, but I let my boys look up in a few vehicles and no one said anything. On Veterans Day they also had a live show. My boys (4 and 7) both had a lot of fun.

This state military museum has quite a few interesting exhibits if you are interested in military history and memorabilia. There are many Jeeps, tanks, armored cars, helicopters, planes, and other historical items on view. There is no admission fee. The staff are very helpful and friendly and there is a small gift shop on site with many inexpensive books and gifts for the history or military buff. I gave it a lower rating because it was fairly difficult to find although the military servicemen at the gate gave fairly good directions you have to drive on to the base and really look for the sign.

Loved this place and was amazing it was free! A little bit of an experience to get to it as you have to drive through a checkpoint at a military base and through the base roads, but it's not bad (just three rights at stop signs). Once you are there there are lots of equipment and tanks outside the building, and endless stuff inside. Great displays on the war on terror, lost squadron, military vehicles and the Texan wars. Worth a stop, you should definitely check it out!

The Texas Military Forces Museum is a first rate museum. I highly recommend a visit to this museum if you have any interest in Texas history. It features an extensive collection of military hardware and vehicles. The Civil War section of this museum has the best overview of the course and key battles of the war and this includes the numerous Civil War museums I have visited. The museum is up to date and it includes a section on the War on Terror. A special subsection of museum includes an extensive collection of military insignia that needs to be seen. If you are in the Austin area, you should plan a visit.
