This could be useful to others who need a visa to travel to Japan. We learned a lesson while attempting to apply for a visa from the Japanese consulate in Boston. Their website states that people can apply for a visa up to three months in advance. The visa they issue is only valid for three months. What their website doesn’t say is that they don’t issue visas that have a future start date, like the European consulates do. So in effect, if you apply three months in advance, they will issue a visa with a start date from the time you apply and not from the date you request even if you apply within the 3 month window stated on their website. So don’t apply too early, and don’t apply too late. Different cultures communicate differently it seems, and we discovered that the hard way. Fingers crossed, when we actually do apply for the visa, things will be smooth this time around.

Get every paperwork ready and perfect. I went 5 weeks before the date, with all the necessary documents, including flight itinerary and hotel reservation. They asked me to fill out a detailed day-by-day activity sheet, and I told them I have not planned out the whole trip yet, but then the person was just like well, then maybe you should go back and think about what you want to do first and then come back. Don't know why they are so condescending

I went here to get my Visa. Upon arriving, I did not have everything required. I went and got the necessary paperwork. When I made it back to the Embassy, there were a couple minutes left before they went to lunch. Instead of assisting me, they all went to lunch and I had to wait an extra hour to be helped.

Very helpful, nice and professional! I was getting tourist visa to Japan through The Consulate General of Japan in Boston. They walked me through the application process and explained everything in details.

Nice people and decent service. I don't hold a US passport but have no difficulty in applying for a Japan tourist visa. Well just make sure all your documents are in order.
