Story

Before the Apollo, before the Regal, there was The Howard Theatre. At its opening in 1910 it was “the largest colored theatre in the world.” Sadly shuttered and neglected since the early 1980s, the once majestic building with its “trunk of soul” survived death in order to be reborn in 2012.

For most of the 20th century, The Howard Theatre captivated audiences with music, dance, drama and comedy. In its early days, speakers like Booker T. Washington shared the stage with musicals, road shows, vaudeville acts, theater productions and community programs. Later, Washington’s favorite son Duke Ellington inaugurated a new era of jazz big bands on The Howard’s stage.

When the nation was deeply divided by segregation, The Howard Theatre provided a place where color barriers blurred and music unified. Dubbed the “Theatre for The People” by The Washington Bee, it was the place where dignitaries like President Franklin D. Roosevelt gathered with everyday folks to see both superstars and rising stars – many of whom debuted at The Howard Theatre. Along with Duke Ellington, greats such as Ella Fitzgerald, Louis Armstrong, Billie Holliday, Cab Calloway and Nat King Cole graced the Howard stage and made way for talents like Marvin Gaye, Aretha Franklin, Dizzy Gilespie, The Supremes, Otis Redding, Lena Horne and James Brown.

The Howard Theatre inspired change, yet felt the impact of a nation in flux following the 1968 riots. Eventually, the degradation of the neighborhood forced the theater to close. After several false starts in the late ’70s and early ’80s to reinvigorate The Howard, the curtains fell and the theatre remained shuttered until 2012. Today, the Howard Theatre is enjoying rebirth and a entering a new era in its long and prestigious history.

Being the PROUD Washingtonian that I am and fellow Howard University Alumni. This was my first time ever visiting the Iconic Howard Theatre. Oh and with full disclosure I grew up just a few blocks away. I am so thankful that during Washington’s gentrification they decided to keep this legendary landmark. I loved the ambience, spacious and cozy ( 2nd floor is balcony seating for RSVP. The service, the moderately priced menu, and the overall culture. Please if you’re ever visiting the “Nation’s Capital” Washington, D.C. it’s a must see. Just a friendly reminder, even though there’s parking across the street, and valet. I would suggest taking Metro/Rail Green/ Yellow lines exit Shaw/ Howard.

The Howard Theatre is a beautiful venue with great shows. However, it needs new management, wait staff, valet, security and better customer service. With these changes it'll be the true, historic gem it's meant to be.

I loved how no matter where you are the act seemed so close. The crowd was diverse and everyone was there having a great time. Especially when the Go-Go started playing!! Love DC

Good venue for concerts. General Admission standing room on the floor. Reserved tables and booths around the perimeter. Upper level reserved section as well. Entrance/exit is the same doorway making it difficult for a large crowd to depart. Bathrooms were large and located downstairs. But made difficult, if crowded, to get to because of the narrow doorway near the entrance/exit area. Parking garage located next door made it convenient but be sure to note what time the garage closes for the night or else you may not be able to retrieve your car until the garage opens again. There was a nominal fee to park here.
