The Ohio Statehouse

About

The Ohio Statehouse has housed state government since 1857. This magnificent Greek Revival structure was started in 1839 and completed in 1860.

Backpacks are allowed in the Ohio Statehouse and are allowed once again in the "secure" area of the Vern Riffe Center for Government and the Arts [which is most of the building] because there are now metal detectors and X-ray machines at the security checkpoint at the Riffe Center. The "no backpacks" rule at the Riffe Center had ended on January 2, 2018 after having been in effect for the previous several years. All visitors to the "secure area" of the Riffe Center must present an ID at the desk across the lobby from the High St. entrance; a staff member will photocopy that ID and will place the copy of the ID inside of a plastic "name tag" which the visitor must wear while inside of the Riffe Center. I mention this here because many people who visit their Ohio Senators in the Ohio Statehouse also visit their Ohio Representatives in the Riffe Center and may want to know about this different security procedure at the Riffe Center before arriving at the security checkpoint. The Ohio Statehouse does not require that visitors present an ID.

While I think any statehouse is worth a visit, and we wander the country taking in as many as possible, this is one of the least attractive ones. They host a good landscape/gardens and the flower beds that are planted like OH & US flags are magnificent! Rotunda marble mosaic floor is gorgeous as is the interior of the adjoining building, but the statehouse exterior is plain and the interior color scheme is awful. There is a nice museum in the basement, which used to be the stables. Don't miss the taxidermy pigeon in the connecting arboretum. Someone had a sense of humor.

I do not know how you review a State Capitol, but I was there for Youth in Government multiple times and it is very functionable, beautiful, accessible, and historical and you can have events held in the Capitol. Can not really complain about anything except that it can sometimes take awhile to get in the Capitol during Youth in Government, but that is only annual and nothing major that would prevent events and what not. A great Capitol over all.

Weekly visits to the State House, meetings with legislators, educating and staying informed. A great place for a casual visit and lunch.
