This is a nationally renowned office with a never-ending stream of committed, talented trial lawyers who move mountains for very little pay and regularly obtain not guilty verdicts from misdemeanor DUI's to serious felonies. It also has an appellate division that is responsible for the bulk of the defense-friendly case law across the state of Florida over the last thirty-five years and has even taken several cases to the United States Supreme Court, a very rare thing for a state public defender office. Of course, the criminal justice system leaves almost everyone - whether defendant, victim, or witness - with a bitter taste in their mouths, regardless of the outcome. The office is tasked with holding the front line as part of a high volume criminal justice system that leaves lawyers with heavy case loads, and a number of clients dissatisfied with the face time they receive. This is an unfortunate feature of busy criminal jurisdictions around the country and is of course unfair to everyone involved. But think twice before you badmouth the tireless public defenders who do more to push back against police, prosecutors, and judges than anyone else, and be careful before giving your hard-earned money to someone who may care less about you and your case than those who have dedicated their lives and careers to indigent defense.

Awful people to work around. Way too much profanity used in the office. Alot of work but low pay and hardly any raises.

My gf is in jail now because they never return calls or take accurate messages. She had 2 cases together, she is a recovering addict, on methadone treatment, btw. Yes she messed up, but was finally on a good path, her atty for 1 case Norah Gay, promised to see about taking both cases or getting back to her with the date of her other hearing and which atty. we called 20 times, never a reply, long story short, she was just arrested for FTA and is in total agony, I am sick inside listening to her begging me to help, I cant get anywhere. There is no justice if you are poor. I was a Marine, worked my ass off my whole life, and lost everything in the great recession. I paid many hundreds of thousands into the system over my life, had up to 50 employees in my business. Now, i'm destitute and my eyes are open to the evil and callous system that is designed to bleed the many to feed the few. I gave and helped all my life, only to find it was all a sham. So much greed, so much selfishness. I am so ashamed that I ever served this country and actually believed that if I ever fell, there would be a hand ready, as I did so so many times when I was able. So ashamed. No one should work in the Public Defenders unless they still care about people.

I had attorney maura short as my public defender. I fell ill while i was heading to the court house i started vomitting due to food poisoning therefore i called her at a number she told me i could reach her at. While calling her over 50 times and getting nothing but a busy signal. I attempted to call the court to see if they could relay the message to her and i was told that i should continue trying to reach her bc they couldnt help me. While trying to reach her the following day i asked a officer what my next step should be and he told me that the public defenders office would help. I called and a lady answered asking me who i need to speak to i couldnt remember the name so she became hostile immediately. She interrupted me in mid sentence asking me my name then put me on hold without any warning. She came back on the phone and said ur attorney is Maur Short and just sent me to a voicemail. After leaving a voicemail i got no phone call in the mail but a letter came in the mail signed by Maura that i have a warrant out for my arrest even though i have been attempting to get in contact with her since the moment i could stop vomiting and could speak properly. This office need a complete over haul and i will be reaching out to every news network that are willing to hear me out. I hope these people get fired for the way they treat the people who pay for their bills. I wish i had the option of not allowing my taxes to go to these people.

If I could give this office a lower review I would. First of all the receptionist who answers the main line is RUDE and seriously lacks professionalism. Does not provide her name to callers for this reason. She would not provide her name, refused to give the name of or connect me with her Supervisor and hung up. Upon my initial call, she transferred me to mid-sentence to someone's voicemail, without determining who I needed to speak to or what I wanted. The information I was seeking was actually something she could have provided me. The Office Manager needs to seriously review her job performance. #WASTEOFMYTAXDOLLARS
