The Train Station Restaurant

About

Good Food, Good Times & Good People

Story

The Train Station is located in downtown Newport News, Virginia. Nestled in a small inlet of the James River, the restaurant has a spacious deck which sits on the waterway and provides a spectacular view of the river and its surrounding recreational and industrial activities. On a warm evening you can enhance your dining experience with a glorious sunset or omnibus storm clouds providing an arresting scene. There's something unique in the building from the moment you step inside the doors and set your eyes on the the rich decor of the main dining room's teal and dusty rose blends trimmed throughout with the original mahogany-toned wood. The walls of the The Train Station are rich with the history of Newport News' downtown, railroad and waterways.

The real purpose of the visit is to experience the best crab cakes on the Virginia Peninsula, made with 100% lump crab meat- no filler, fried and broiled trout, and mouth watering peach and apple cobbler. While the menu concentrates on seafood, we have something to interest everyone. Join us on Friday evenings for Hampton Roads' most talented jazz musicians; and on Sundays, for traditional southern cuisine on the Sunday After Church Buffet. The view of the James River, the historical flavor and artifacts throughout the building, the delicious food and the service make The Train Station a positive dining experience.

Consider The Train Station for your private special event. We host weddings, receptions, wedding rehearsals dinners, family reunions, class reunions, anniversaries, birthday and graduation parties, holiday parties and showers.

The food was delicious. The crab cakes were 100% crabmeat with maybe a .001% filling. It was picture perfect Golden brown. The oysters were done to perfection. The trout tasted like it was just caught today. The mac & cheese and the chicken gumbo soup needed a little work. The service was a bit slow but if you came for food and entertainment just enjoy the entertainment until the food arrive. The jazz band was top notch. I would have paid $100 just for the picturesque view of the James and the food but instead my ticket for two was only $65 for the food, ambience and a couple of hours of live jazz. I just can't believe it.

I liked this place because you meet people from all walks of life. They have an excellent live music night that they let amateurs play along with the band. Prompt service and clean

First time patron on a Friday night. Food and atmosphere was great, the live jazz was great. Nice crowd. Waitress, Kay, was helpful and fun. Dirty bong water is my drink there, slo gin fizz is not. Crab cake, trout, broccoli, and cornbread! I will be returning.

The food was ok. In other words, it wasn't disgusting, it was flavorful. However, the waiter took his sweet time and had a bogus excuse for everything. The best thing this venue has going is the live music and the nostalgia associated with it being a train station in an earlier life. Our cornbread wasn't fresh and the waiter didn't even bring us utensils or water until we asked him for it. It was laughable honestly. It's not a bad venue, but I'm not excited to take my business back. They have some growing to do. I'm tired of sacrificing quality of service in order to support black business. When will we rise to the occasion? Don't be mad at this post, just do better.
