Thurmond Station is both an Amtrak Stop and a New River Gorge National Park Visitor Center. Nice place to start your visit to the Historic town of Thurmond WV. The tracks are still used by CSX operations here as well. This is an awesome place to visit if you are into the Coal Mining and Railroad history in WV. It is a narrow, long, two story, wooden structure with a slate roof that was built in 1905 by the C&O railroad. Check my FB Picture Albums/Posts for more

This is a stop on Amtrak's Cardinal line; I visited the station, but did not take a train. It's a "dumb terminal" in the sense that you can board and exit trains here, but Amtrak has no services or staff here. The Cardinal arrives at 6:59 PM from New York to Chicago, and at 9:41 AM from Chicago to New York (as of 7/25/17). The building is sheltered, but passengers aren't able to enter it because it closes before the Chicago-bound train arrives and doesn't open until after the New York-bound train leaves. For protection from cold or precipitation, you may have to stay in your car. In good weather, it is a very scenic place to wait for a train.

Thurmond is an Amtrak "fall stop" so yes, you can catch a Amtrak train here (if you already have reservations) but don't expect to buy tickets here as this isn't an actual Amtrak station -- it's a restored depot that serves as a NPS museum with limited hours of operation and not open for most/many of the fall/winter months. Touring the depot and check out the exhibits inside it is the highlight of any visit to Thurmond, however, largely because the NPS allowed virtually everything else that once existed in Thurmond to be destroyed.
