December of 2003 was when Urban Bar-B-Que got its start in Rockville, MD as a quick service, carry-out restaurant. 11 years and 8 locations later Urban Bar-B-Que has grown to become one of the local hot spots of Maryland and Virginia. Co-Founders, Dave Calkins and Lee Howard, have not looked back since their bar-b-que has been embraced by many in the area. The daughter and son-in-law of David Calkins have taken over this location with pride and hope to continue the legacy of the original UBQ! The restaurant has a fast-casual feel with an urban industrial look to it that has become quite the attraction for local bar-b-que fanatics. The energetic restaurant has a different style then your typical bar-b-que restaurant. UBQ has a simple menu focusing on their 12-14 hour wood-smoked meats with sandwich as well as different plate options; however, the fun doesn’t stop there as the award winning “Soul Rolls” are a must try along with other appetizer, chili and salad options. All orders are placed at the counter while customers wait in anticipation for their name to be called out. Patrons can’t get enough as this mouth-watering slow smoked BBQ is prepared in just minutes! It’s safe to say the DMV area is in for a slow-smoked treat as authentic BBQ is found few and far between.
