Story

The Greater Roanoke Transit Company, known locally as Valley Metro, is a private, non-profit, public service organization wholly owned by the City of Roanoke. Operations began in 1975 when what had been a privately owned transit system, the Roanoke City Lines, went public.

Today, Valley Metro provides a comprehensive range of transportation services to the residents of the greater Roanoke Valley area. Offering bus service along fixed routes, special services for the disabled, commuter service to the New River Valley, Bedford, Lynchburg and special event shuttle buses; Valley Metro is committed to meeting the needs of area commuters.

Valley Metro contracts with First Transit, Inc. to provide its dedicated team of transportation professionals. The General Manager and Assistant General Manger are employees of First Transit, Inc. and the remainder of the staff are employees of Southwestern Virginia Transit Management Company, Inc. Funding sources include operating and capital grants from federal, state, and local agencies including the Federal Transit Administration (FTA), the Virginia Department of Rail and Public Transportation, and the City of Roanoke. Additional sources of funding include fare box revenues, advertising revenues, and the sale of passes.

Valley Metro is headquartered in the Roy Z. Meador Operations, Maintenance and Administrative Facility, located at 1108 Campbell Avenue, S.E. The two-level facility houses management offices, and the transportation, administrative and maintenance departments. The 70,000 square foot facility features a shop and garage area on the second level, which is accessed by ramps on either side of the building. Our team of skilled mechanics in Valley Metro’s “state-of-the-art” facility does all bus repair, paint and bodywork, and engine rebuilding in-house.

The Administrative, Transportation, and Maintenance offices are located on the second level, as are the Dispatch Center, conference rooms and employee lounge and recreation area. The first level of the building features a service area with automatic bus wash and indoor parking for the fleet of 48 buses. Office hours are 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday, and the telephone number is 982-2222. The office is closed on holidays

The Campbell Court Transportation Center is situated in the heart of the downtown Roanoke business and shopping districts. Located at 17-31 West Campbell Avenue, Campbell Court is just a block away from Roanoke’s Historic City Market, where a variety of festivals and events take place throughout the year. Also nearby is Center in the Square, a cultural arts facility.

Behind the beautifully restored nineteenth century facades, Campbell Court features a Transportation Center, Parking Garage, and modern office and retail space. On the ground level, Valley Metro’s Transportation Center provides passenger information, ticket sales, and a comfortable lobby for transit patrons. The terminal serves as a central hub for easy transfer onto Valley Metro buses or other modes of transportation. A Greyhound bus station is located in the terminal, and the facility also features a 104-space parking garage for private vehicles, with parking available at monthly rates. The remainder of the first level, the second level, and the third level are leased to a variety of retail, restaurant, and business establishments. Campbell Court offers competitive leasing rates.

The Greater Roanoke Transit Company owns Campbell Court. The GRTC Board of Directors governs the policies and operational procedures of the facility, as well as approval of all tenants.

I did something yesterday that I haven't done in 40+ years. I rode a Valley Metro bus!. Wow how times have changed. Not knowing anything about how they operate now i.e. schedules routes fares etc. I waited for 1.5 hours before a bus could be seen going my way. I promptly got on and ask the driver how much the fare was. He sarcastically said $1.75. I slid 2 one dollar bills in the machine and went on my way. He actually hollered at me and said " here is your cash card". That is how they give you your change now. After asking for a transfer so I could ride to my old hometown of Salem I took my seat. There were people from all walks of life on the bus. A fella with a briefcase a lady with a toddler and a couple of young people talking very loudly and cursing. When the bus arrived at Campbell Court I ask the sarcastic driver which bus went to Salem. He must have been getting off work as he was happy go lucky by then. He directed me to my next bus and I said thank you. He apologized to me for hollering at me which I just blew it off because I know he has to deal with some not so kind people. I boarded the next bus going to Salem and handed the driver my transfer. He laughed jokingly and said" your first time riding?" I said no but it has been 40+ years and I could hear a lot of people on the bus chuckling as I followed the drivers directions on how to use a transfer.I chuckled to after looking back at the bus load of people. I must have made their day because as I walked back to my seat everybody was actually welcoming me back to the family that rides everyday. One man shook my hand and said if you need any help I willl be glad to assist you. On to Salem we went and I didn't know how long that ride would be. We went all over Salem on this particular route. It took 2 hours to get back to Campbell Court. I talked with several people and everyone I talked with was so polite. Even the driver said "have a good evening" every time someone left the bus. We stopped in front of the old county court house and I witnessed the most amazing thing I had seen in years. This lady announced that a wheelchair was coming and people adjusted the seating arrangement. There is a special place in front of the bus where the seats fold up and accomadate a wheelchair. Also the driver sent an automatic ramp out of the bus so this handicapped individual could just ride right up on the bus. My faith in people was restored at that very moment. We arrived at the " bus depot" and everyone went scrambling to their next bus. My ride was a joyous one. It was a welcome site after hearing so many people complain about Valley Metro. Kudos to the bus drivers and thank you for a very pleasant experience.

I ride very frequently actually...i think some drivers are very rude and honestly shouldnt work with the public. I have a really bad ankle injury and ive been launched out of my seat into the isle and another time before i could get to a seat the driver took off causing me to almost fall. The smoking is awful there...its like you are around a smoker everywhere you turn its blown in your face...very gross. Something seriously needs to be done about that..not to mention bein attacked on the bus by drunks who are allowed to board. The pungent smell of marijuana is not pleasing either.

They allow people to smoke in the terminal with babies and non smokers the building has a roof and walls smoking should not be allowed and enforced by the police this is not fair to non smokers

Unlike most people I've ever had an issue with the rude bus driver everybody on the bus is friendly and talkative usually but I have been skipped while standing at the bus stop more times than I can tell you as in they literally drive right by me then I call them and they basically tell me tough s*** we can't control the bus driver saw you
