(Posted for Holly Conway) On June 15th, I took Dakota to VCA Bradshaw to have a mole removed. Instead, his vet noticed that his belly was hanging low so she did a quick ultra sound. She found abnormalities in his spleen. On June 20th, I took him back for a more thorough ultra sound. On June 22nd, I was given the results of that ultra sound and he came back positive for lymphoma. I took him to your facility to meet with Dr. O'Brien on June 23rd. As you can see, I acted very quickly and was proactive in seeking specialized medical intervention for him. In that meeting, Dr. O'Brien explained that chemotherapy wouldn't save Dakota's life, but it would extend his life and make him more comfortable. She said he was a good candidate because the lymphoma was caught early, it was only in his spleen and 2 spots in his abdomen but not in any other organs, and his blood work was perfect. He started chemotherapy and was treated once a week from then until his last treatment on August 31st. During his course of treatment, I was most unhappy with the side effects Dakota experienced as well as the response I got when I called and asked for help. So, I emailed Dr. O'Brien. I met with Dr. O'Brien on August 24th and she seemed to address my concerns. Dakota was also given chemotherapy that day. After that, Dakota got worse. On Wednesday, August 30th, I called Dr. O'Brien in tears and told her that Dakota had thrown up the day before, had had diarrhea for weeks, was refusing to eat, and was losing the use of his back legs. I said he was very sick and I asked if I could take him to Bradshaw for a shot of Cerenia since that had worked well for him before. She said no, she didn't want him being given any medication without her examining him. Then she said she didn't have any openings in her schedule to see him, and he would have to wait until the next day. On his post appointment notes on August 24th, she had written, "Dakota's lymph nodes continue to remain small, suggesting a good response to therapy thus far." So, it was quite unexpected that when I had called saying he was so sick, she wasn't concerned enough to allow him to receive care at Bradshaw, or to see him as an emergency, and then the next day she suggested having him put down. Supportive care and/or hospitalization was never even offered as an option, I had to request it.I reminded them that I never would have agreed to chemotherapy if it wasn't going to improve and extend his life. The reason that I took him to an oncologist was so he would get specialized care. Instead, I spent a lot of time doing research and on the phone asking for help with his side effects. Both of the Bradshaw vets contacted me and expressed their concern for Dakota's condition. They recommended that I take him to Bradshaw ASAP for supportive care and possible hospitalization. On September 3, I took him there and he received subcutaneous fluids, a shot of Cerenia, and the ER vet gave me a liquid form of Metronidizole to administer at home. They sent me home with IV bags to give subcutaneous fluids at home. That seemed to help him, but the night of September 4th, he stopped being able to walk and had labored breathing. He was a 100 pound dog, so I was not able to lift him, so he didn't go to the ER until the next morning, Sept. 5th. By then he was completely dehydrated, was running a fever of 106 degrees, and needed oxygen to breathe. He was put to sleep after a couple of hours of supportive care. I was most unhappy with Dr. O'Brien's care of my beloved Golden.

So I called them in the middle of the night because my dog got sprayed in the face full on by a skunk. I was going to just leave his smelly butt (and face)outside and deal with it all in the morning but I made the mistake of consulting Dr Google and managed to get myself scared about how serious it could be. The person who answered the phone was sweet and funny and honest and clearly did not care just about getting me in there to pay him. He told me the real story on what I needed to do right away and how I could finish taking care of the problem in the am ...very positive experience. Thank you!

More concerned with making money than treating my cat. I brought my cat here due to shortness of breath and some sort of eye infection. They charged $140 for the visit, and another $50 for a 10 day round of antibiotics. That was all great! Then..giving my cat a pill was comparable to having a root canal. He was not having any part of it. So I waited to see if the infection would get better with the 3 pills I managed to get down his throat. It didnt. I called the vet back and asked for the same prescription in the liquid form. They denied it and said I would need to pay the $140 exam fee again. Unbelievable! I will never go back there.

Dr. Bowers is a God send. He listens, works with owners, and really follows through to make sure his diagnosis is correct. Very clean facility and great and friendly staff. My baby Lucille loves going to VCA and loves the after visit treats!!!

In 2016 we had the sad experience of taking in 3 of our kitties to be put to sleep because they were old and their bodies were worn out. The kitties were a mom and her two kittens that we found in the bushes in 1998. They had good long lives and we found that this VCA facility being a 24 hour facility works best for us. When the time came for each kitty, we were able to take them in late in the evening when it was quiet and peaceful. We were allowed to take out time and the staff was respectful, as were the vets who administered the medication. We had each kitty cremated and they were returned in a beautiful wood box along with a colorful ceramic disc with their name and paw print. I hope to not have to repeat this experience for a long time, but will certainly return to this VCA facility. Thank you.
