We brought our 9 yr old dachshund in and he required neck surgery. Dr. Alcott performed the surgery and demonstrated superior professionalism before and after the operation. Unfortunately, there were secondary problems that prevented our pet from recovering. We had to put him down today, but we assured Dr. Alcott that he did all that he could. The staff treated us with compassion. The only issue we had with this establishment was the long wait times in visiting or being able to talk to a tech or the Dr on call.

We were visiting from out of town when our dog had an encounter with a cholla. VSC came up in a quick Google search as a 24 hour vet center. We rushed our dog in and despite our stress the whole experience was amazing. The staff and Dr. Boozer were all very knowledgeable, friendly, & professional. They took excellent care of our dog and were very thorough and caring. I highly recommend this clinic. The facility is well maintained and easy to locate. The costs were very reasonable.

Today is April 7, 2016. I am my dog's advocate and am informing the public of a horrible case of negligence during her stay at this clinic. This is a long story but I will summarize as best I can. November 2015, I took my 15 year Pug in to have a herniated disc removed. After Dr. Alcott reviewed her scan, I was given a price range that it would cost, between $3500 to approx. $5000. I was told that I would have to pay the high side before I left just in case he ran into something unforeseen. When I picked her up, it was an additional $1,000. He decided to remove another disc. No problem, I wanted him to do what was necessary. He'd call me daily for updates, each time informing me that she's a "whiner". I told him she never whines, much less barks... I was puzzled that he always mentioned that. Much later, I figured out why. After close to a week, I picked her up around 8pm. She looked horrible but I didn't understand why. Dr. Alcott gave me a rosy outlook for her release, although he said that they thought her pupils weren't dilating properly and that I should bring her back in 10 days to see their Ophthalmologist, Dr. Kubai, but was also told that she would be on her feet in no time and walking by Christmas... He did tell me that his biggest concern was her kidney function and that I should have her on a Renal formula. Outside of that, no other conversation about her eyes took place. I took her home and tried to get her to stand and walk but she crashed right into the wall. At first I thought she was losing her balance due to the surgery -- but it was because she was blind! First thing the next morning, I took her back and told Dr. Alcott she was BLIND and I refused to take her home. NOW, she was treated as an emergency patient. The Opthamologist was now in the loop and recommended she stay another week because she need about 6 medications dropped into her eyes every single hour. NOBODY would explain why my dog was damaged. I did a lot of digging and finally learned through an emergency room doctor that my Pug scratched the membranes off both of her eyes after surgery and developed a severe corneal infection. She was not used to having ointment in her eyes and her head was not coned after the spinal surgery. She was blind due to layer upon layer of scar tissue. Because she couldn't walk on her own or go out the doggie door like she used to, I have to take her out several times a day, each time cleaning her thoroughly. All of this with an uncomfortable cone on her head. Funny, the cone was so important after the second hospitalization but not after the spinal surgery... My dog lost 25% of her body weight and I equally lost weight. I missed Christmas, Thanksgiving, birthdays, weddings, dinner invitations, etc. I have been robbed of my freedom due to Dr. Alcott's decision not to consult Dr. Kubai, the opthamologist. Because of her new disability, 5 months later, she still barely gets around and my freedom as I knew it is now over since she needs constant care. Back in December, I called the hospital administrator Judith and she would not return my calls. So I called the CEO in Connecticut and he put me in touch with the Sr. VP, Hal. Hal made things happen and had the medical director, Dr. Bene' contact me. At this point, Judith was not involved. Dr. Bene' treated me like I was trying to hustle him, he was rude and condescending and actually told me that my dog's eyes were damaged in MY care (overnight after the disc surgery). I don't think I can properly state here just how angry I was to hear this, but I told him that his doctor was negligent and he wanted her out of the hospital to make room for more back surgery patients, $$$$ -- she was taking up valuable space. I finally got the hospital to admit wrongdoing. Dr. Bene', the medical director, offered to give me free medication and Dr. Kubai's care until her eye issue was resolved. Today I received a FEDEX letter notifying me that they will no longer treat my pug because I objected when the staff tried to charge me. Her eye medication alone is hundreds of $$$ a month...

We took our two year old female GSD to the Veterinary Specialty Center on La Canada on a Saturday afternoon due to blood in her urine. We did not wait long to see a Vet because there wasn’t anybody else in the waiting room. The vet on staff did a brief exam and then took our GSD back to continue the exam in better light. After about 15 minutes, she came back with our dog. She stated that she didn’t test for a urinary tract infection because we didn’t think our dog was straining to urinate. Instead, she performed a brief ultrasound and was very careful to qualify her findings by saying something to the effect of “I am not a radiologist, but I think I saw a polyp.” She went on to say that while some polyps can be malignant, given that our dog is just two, that was highly unlikely. At no time did she show us the ultrasound. The vet said that we should make an appointment with one of their internal medicine specialists and return later in the week for a comprehensive ultrasound and possible needle biopsy of the polyp. They worked up an estimate and brought it to us. At the low end, it would be $345 and at the high end it would be almost $1,000. I did not bring my dog back to this place because I did some research and found that urinary polyps are caused by untreated and frequent Urinary Tract Infections, so why not test her for a UTI? Instead, we took her to our regular vet who did a whole bunch of tests, including x-rays. Our regular vet even showed us every xray that they took. The verdict is that our dog does NOT have any polyps, tumors, or masses. I feel as if this particular emergency vet sidestepped something that could have been far cheaper to treat to drum up business for their expensive tests. I will not be returning to this emergency vet.

Sadly, we had to euthanize our dog today, and I highly recommend this beautiful facility. It was a walk in appointment, they were so accomodating and sensitive towards us. They let us hold her and spend time outdoors, while they sedated her, so we were all relaxed. It was a beautiful goodbye.
