Story

The Veterinary Specialty and Emergency Center of Delaware (VSCD) is the only veterinary practice in Delaware providing both 24/7 emergency and intensive care services, as well as specialized care for dogs and cats. The original hospital was founded in 2000 in Newport, Delaware by a group of five practicing veterinary specialty partners and was located just outside Delaware’s metropolitan area of Wilmington for the first nine years of its existence. In 2009, the hospital expanded into a larger building behind the New Castle County Airport in New Castle, Delaware on Churchmans Road and is easily accessible via major tri-state highways such as I-95, Delaware Route 13, and the Delaware Memorial Bridge. Pet parents and their pets are drawn primarily from Delaware, Maryland, Southern New Jersey and Southern Pennsylvania.

Service options have been expanded since the original opening to include weekday and some weekend appointments for Acupuncture, Anesthesia, Cardiology, Diagnostic Imaging including CT, Emergency and Critical Care, Internal Medicine, Oncology, Ophthalmology, Physical Rehabilitation with Hydrotherapy and Surgery. As a 24/7 facility, weekend appointments are also held for Ophthalmology, Internal Medicine and Rehabilitation, as well as a busy Emergency/Critical Care Services. In addition, a Radiocat service is available on-site by a private contractor.

Our main hospital in New Castle is located at 290 Churchmans Road in New Castle, Delaware, just behind the New Castle County Airport, where we see specialty appointments and provide state-of-the-art emergency and critical care services.

Our satellite site is located at 1482 East Lebanon Road, Dover, Delaware (site of the Delmarva Animal Emergency Center). Specialists in internal medicine and ophthalmology surgery are available for consultations, rechecks, screenings, and limited diagnostics on Tuesdays and Thursdays, with major procedures

The practice now has three veterinary partners, approximately 33 specialists and staff veterinarians, almost 50 nurses and five management team members.

I brought my dog in to the center on a Friday night for a dog bite and they were phenomenal from start to finish. The front desk girls were pleasant and helpful, the check in process was quick and my dog was seen in a reasonable time. Even though the bite was not serious my dog needed staples, medication, as well as take home medication. Going off of what I have paid in the past for just a routine visit to my regular vet I was expecting a bill well over $500 but to my surprise the bill didn't even exceed $300 and they even offered to let my dog stay the night at no extra charge. I was so relieved that I was able to give my dog the proper treatment he needed without feeling stressed about the financial burden. Thank you so much for making me and my dog feel at ease during such a stressful time.

I'm a veterinarian and my sister recently had a tragic death of their young dog on Thanksgiving day. They were at a rest stop in traveling to family and she she heard a noise and came loose from her harness. They tried to retrieve her but she was so scared she jumped a barrier and was hit by a car in front of them and their children. They were able to make it to VSEC with her and I spoke to everyone from the receptionist to the critical care specialist while they tried to save her. Unfortunately, her injuries were too severe to save her. However, the compassion, professionalism, and effort from the entire staff was something I'm very grateful for. From a veterinarians prospective, they did everything they could to save her. I could feel the compassion and genuine hope from everyone on staff. Her family is devastated and feel terrible, but the kindness they were fortunate enough stumble onto will not be forgotten. I can't think how stressful and emotionally exhausting that job can be - but they haven't lost their compassion for others. I never got the names of the people I spoke to, but I want them to know they are doing a wonderful job.

I live in Maryland but came here because gallbladder surgery was 1K less than my state! Dr. Roberts too wonderful care of my dog and also included other things while he was in surgery to save me money down the road. I highly recommend him as a doctor. My dog had his surgery in February and he's doing wonderful!

I had to put my dog to sleep on Thanksgiving. I was beside myself as to whether it was right thing to do at the time. Dr. Laura and the staff we extremely kind and supportive to whatever choice I made. They gave me information and time to make what I feel was the right choice. This place went beyond anything required and I am greatful.

Very nice place! My cat, Mark, is a cardiac patient with Dr. King. Dr. King and the tech who assists her (can't recall his name) are both very kind and nice. It is a nice facility and I appreciate it being there for us. We have been going VSCD for about 3 years now. I would highly recommend this center and Dr. King to anyone need a veterinary cardiologist.
