Wall Drug Store

About

America's Favorite Roadside Attraction!

Story

1931, December. Ted and Dorothy Hustead had just bought the one and only drug store in a town called Wall. The settlers named it this because it is on the edge of the South Dakota Badlands. Needless to say, business was not booming at this point in time. The family decided to give the store five years to grow.

Summer 1936, the business still had not grown much. With two children to care for times were not easy. One sweltering night after being kept awake from passing cars on Route 16A Dorothy has a personal epiphany. Her thought was that driving across the hot prairie travelers get thirsty. They want water. Ice water!!

Therefore, with the Depression in full swing, they installed the billboards.

It worked! Travelers WERE parched and business had never been better.

The next summer the family hired eight girls to help with the busy summer crowds.

(Now the Drug store draws up to twenty thousand people on a good summer day with almost one hundred employees on a given day)

Free ice water brought the Hustead's a long way. This story also teaches an important lesson- there is absolutely no place on God's earth that is Godforsaken. No matter where you live, you can succeed, because wherever you are you can reach out to other people with something that they need!

Wall Drug Store has created its own reputation through excessive advertising and the infamous "free ice water," but it's worth the stop to say you've been there. They have loads of niche stores, such as a cowboy boots area or a bookstore focusing on the history of the region. The main area has plenty of touristy items for purchase to fulfill any desire. The restaurant was good, I enjoyed the bison burger and the 5 cent coffee (and of course the ice water). It was definitely a fun detour.

For some odd reason I see no mention of all the great free RV parking Wall Drug offers. If you're on the road and are self contained the parking area is HUGE. Paved areas and dirt areas. A great boon docking spot, if you are looking for a place to pull over and spend the night without the hassle of checking into an RV Park, this is it. We travel for work and these gems along the highway are perfect for a quiet nights sleep. Wall drug is also a great American icon. Not for the minimalistic person, that's for sure. Fun and quirky.

My family and I had a great time here! Take the time and get off the highway and drive over and see this place. There are so many stores inside this Wall Drug. It just keeps going and going and going. Pretty much anything you can think of buying on a trip you will find here. I'm giving it a five because everything we bought here was quality made!

This is a normal tourist trap. But traveling the United States and in this state there's nowhere else in the area for jobs. The local people need this place to survive. So yes, I stopped and bought some things to support them. If you're on a long drive and you like a $0.05 coffee this is the place for you. They have lots of little souvenirs and also give a free bumper sticker. Which I was surprised to get something for free. I bought lots of little gifts for family there. So stop on by and support the local people.

This is definitely a place you come to once and then probably never again. I counted 60 signs driving over from Rapid City, and probably missed some. Decided to stop in on the way to the Badlands for the heck of it. There is a whole street of souvenir shops. I did end up purchasing a nice ceramic mug at one of them. Lots of photo ops. Great for kids, I imagine. The inside contains a chapel, a drug store, a restaurant and ice cream shop, as well as more souvenir shops. My brother and I decided to try the donuts and the 5 cent coffee. Coffee was for sure worth the price. The donuts were pretty good, but a bit heavy. I'm glad I only had one.
