Walnut Canyon is home to ancient Native American cliff dwellings. Twenty miles long and 400 feet deep, it holds an abundant mix of plants and animals.

Story

Among the remarkable geological cliff formations of the canyon itself, the shapes of the former homes of ancient inhabitants of Walnut Canyon are easily evident. A beautiful park to visit with the family. Nice that the trolley takes you through the park and there are plenty of bathrooms along the way. Lots of picnic areas too. The guides are very knowledgeable. You can stay for as long as you like in the park as long as you do not take the trolley all the way back to the visitor center. There are also what looks like some amazing hiking trails. Would love to go back when the kids are older to do the trails. It was nice to be able to go down into a canyon rather than just looking from the top.

A beautiful place with poignant history of habitation 1000 years ago. Two good trails provide access to views and ruins - the Island Trail the most worthwhile. Lots of stairs, so if you have limited mobility plan for a slower trek or stick to the easier rim trail. Allow a minimum of 2 hours to get the most out of your visit. Park is only open during the day.

Great experience! The hike back up from the dwellings is no joke! A lot of stairs and a steep elevation gain. Take water and take your time!! A 6-year old or older can do it, but take your time. Its great to see where people used to live.

Really nice park. The scenery is gorgeous and the path is really interesting. Lots of stairs and some narrow parts of the path by pretty high drops but there were plenty of people of all ages and abilities there that did fine. They have a nice informational video you can watch if you choose. The paths to the left of the canyon have some nice views, informational signs, and tables to sit.

Great place for a hike or just to go for some peace and quite. Restrooms and water can be found at the ranger area and you should not attempt the hike without that. A chance to view ancient cliff dwelling if you do brave the trails. Highly recommended for those interested in this type of history.
