Watch Hill is a wonderful place, a very picturesque area on a beautiful harbor, with quaint and unique shops and restaurants. At the end of the street is the carousel of 1883 vintage. The horses don't go up and down. Rather, they are suspended on chains, so they swing further out as the carousel speeds up. The riders are limited to 5 feet or 100 lbs. After a few revolutions, the attendants put out a metal arm so that the kids can grab a ring as they go by. At the end of the ride, whoever gets the brass ring gets a token for a free ride, just as in the old days. Right adjacent to the carousel is a beautiful beach, which has a reasonable per person charge.

Fantastic old carousel! The horses are suspended from above, so they tilt and learn a bit as the carousel spins. They also have soft manes, not just molded plastic, which adds to the effect. The price is very reasonable -- $1 for an inside (smaller) horse or $1.50 for an outside horse and the ride is pretty long. Riders on the outside can try to grab little metal rings from a dispenser that hangs near the carousel as it spins. Whoever gets there bronze ring wins a free ride! We rode 6 times on a rainy afternoon and the kids kept wanting more!

An amazing walk back into history where the flying horse carousel delights children and the smell of the ocean should be used in any scratch and sniff olfactory example. What a beautiful beach and experience. The carousel still provides the chance for young riders to tech for a brass ring. One can even be purchased for a wonderful keepsake. I will back to this wonderful place. It is worth a visit. Two thumbs up!

Watch hill is so beautiful...I love visiting ant time of the year. The carousel is great.

A nice location and open setting make this fun for kids even in hot weather. Kids enjoy grabbing the rings as they fly by on their horses and lean out to make a try. The horses hang from chains rather than mounted to a rotating floor so it probably feels like 'flying' to a child - fun!
