Story

The average person often has a very limited knowledge of leather. He may know that it is the skin of an animal, bird, reptile, or fish that has been processed to prevent decay. But he probably does not know much about the manufacturing and preparation of leather goods. Perhaps he takes this useful material for granted and does not stop to think about the great contribution it has made to the daily comfort of man, and indeed, to the very advancement of civilization. If ever anyone had told me I’d be making a living as a cobbler I would have gone to great lengths to let them know how absolutely clinically nuts they were. But after a visit in June of 2012 to the shop of Montana’s premier custom boot maker for a simple holster repair, I left telling myself that I wanted to learn that trade and I was going to find someone willing to take on an apprentice. Knowing since about the age of 12 that I was born in the wrong century, I knew I would have no problem stepping back in time and laboring at this old world trade. Repairing boots and shoes means you’re going to get your hands dirty, real dirty. Part artist, part mechanic and a whole lot of craftsman is what you’ll need to work at the cobbler’s bench. Throw in a good amount of stubborn independence a pinch of salesman and a dash of bullshitter for good measure, does this describe any cobblers you know??
