I brought my boyfriend here while in town visiting for his Birthday Dinner. 1789 far exceeded my expectations. It was a very classy and upscale environment. The food was delicious and our server was exceptional. My only complaint is the unprofessionalism of the hostesses, they seemed very confused. But that did not affect our experience and I would recommend this to anyone in the area!

Came here for anniversary dinner. 1789 truly puts the 'fine' in dining. Attention to detail was impressive with flavorful dishes. Tried venison here and half of it was over cooked but still enjoyable. Halibut was delicious. Nice ambiance.

MAKE A RESERVATION this upscale restaurant is very popular with the local Georgetowners. Not to mention, the bar has limited seating so call ahead or better yet make a reservation! Solo-diners are welcome! Seating at the bar is very limited so best to call ahead. You won't be sorry :)

Previous visits to 1789 had been very good, but the quality of service was down significantly on our last visit. The waiter took a very long time to bring the menus and ask for our drink selections. He never bothered to explain the evening's menu. As I was ordering my drink, he rudely turned away to start chatting with someone at another table. After the entrees came, he never came to ask how the food was. I had called ahead and ordered a special dessert for my wife's birthday, and he never brought it out. We ordered a desert off of the menu, but there was no "Happy Birthday" message. After we reminded him, he brought out the special menu that they had printed, but he brought it out after we already had the check. The food was delicous, but the slow, disinterested service was not. Most likely this was our last visit.

We went for our anniversary and overall were impressed. The staff was excellent. Very attentive, listened to requests, gave us a card and special menus with Happy Anniversary written on it. We ordered a cheese plate which was by far the best I've ever had! We also ordered cocktails which were made wonderfully classic. I ordered the halibut and my husband the New York strip. I loved the halibut but I only ranked the restaurant 4 stars due to the New York strip. Let's just say it was an interesting take on it. When you see steak and potatoes on a menu, you expect steak and potatoes. The steak was pretty small, and was a strange consistency, almost spongy. I'm not sure if it was due to the cooking method (sous vide?) or if it was put through a tenderizer but it was strange! Also the "potatoes" were a tiny heap of finely grated somewhat raw potatoes. Reminded me of hash browns that have been partially blanched. Anyway, the steak wasn't bad, but just completely unexpected. I think that it's partially the servers responsibility to describe a dish that is different than perceived. I have served in fine dining for over 4 years and I have always made sure to describe to guests when there were any dishes that might "surprise" them. Overall we had a wonderful experience though!
