Story

Alameda Park Zoo, located in Alamogordo, New Mexico, was founded in 1898 and claims to be the oldest zoo in the Southwestern United States. It is one of three AZA-accredited zoos in New Mexico and participates in the Species Survival Plan for the Mexican wolf.FeaturesNotable species at the zoo includethe White Sands pupfish, the Mexican wolf, the Hawaiian goose, and the markhor goat. The zoo is a Species Survival Plan Captive Facilityfor the Mexican gray wolf, and in 2006 there were two wolves resident in the zoo. Three Mexican gray wolf pups were born at the zoo in 1994, and seven in 1995.The zoo receives birds of prey that have been injured and heals them. If the birds are well enough to return to the wild they are released, otherwise they are kept in the zoo. Some special exhibits include a lemur exhibit,a birds of prey exhibit, and a butterfly garden.Several programs operate in the Educational Center, including an Eco-Ranger Junior Zookeeper program. The center is also open to the public for viewing videos and reading books from the collection. Some animals are housed in the center.Alameda Park Zoo is accredited through March 2011 by Association of Zoos and Aquariums. It is one of about 220 zoos to hold AZA accreditation, and one of only three in New Mexico (the other two are Albuquerque Biological Park and Living Desert Zoo and Gardens State Park in Carlsbad).

I was pleasantly surprised by the variety of animals here. Definitely a cool little day trip if you've got children. Once a month on Fridays they also open up to the public for free, with live music and food vendors which is a fun time with some friends.

This is a great place for the family. Free summer time concerts and other programs in an otherwise very dull city. Animals here are well taken care of. Many animals are rescues and traded out with other zoos that don't want them anymore. This is a jewel.

We were very surprised by this little zoo. They had several animals we hadn't seen in larger zoos near us. It took us about 90 minutes to go through the entire thing so it was a perfect way to keep our kids entertained while we waited for other attractions in the area to open.

This is a wonderful zoo! Cheap admission, clean and beautiful grounds, lots of animals! Lemurs, cougars, otter, bear, ocelot, fox, aviary. All the animals seem happy and well-cared for, and the lovely, well-maintained park itself is worth the trip. There's even a playground for kids. We'll definitely return, especially since it's obvious that the money is spent making the space better for the animals.

This is very nice little zoo. They have done a lot of beautification work on the zoo. They are also in the process of adding additional enclosures. They also have an excellent reciprocity program with other zoos. If you are a member at another zoo, be sure to bring your card for a discount.
